“understated elegance with a complete lack of pretension”

french chateau visits often mean unnecessary formality - not the case here.

At chateau talhouet, proprietor jean pol and his dogs make you feel like you are welcome guests in his home ... giving you a taste of what it would be like to live in this 15th century rural chateau that he has so lovingly restored over the last 22 years.

the bathroom was modern, spotless and well appointed.

the internet connection was extremely reliable, which was a relief to those of us who must still connect with offices when abroad.

the grounds are beautiful and not overly manicured which helps make it feel like a real home and not a disney attraction.

jean pol served a bountiful continental breakfast and later
the four course dinner prepared by the house chef served by candlelight in the main dining room was a gastronomic treat.

the nearby village of rochefort-en-terre is a fun place to vist while visiting this property.

make certain to ask jean pol for the GPS coordinates as the chateau is slightly off the beaten path... the lengthy private drive will confuse many GPS systems making it hard to find the first time you arrive... but very simple to find from then on!

“Living Like Royalty...For a Weekend.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

My boyfriend surprised me with a weekend getaway while we stayed in France for his business trip. I had no idea what to expect, especially driving deep into the woods and up to this beautiful castle. The best is when two dogs, including an Irish Wolfhound, greeted us. Jean-Pol, the owner and innkeeper, showed us to our room and we were still amazed by the beauty of the place and surrounding environment. This is something you'd see in a Diane Lane/Richard Gere movie :) We had a bottle of wine while reading in the gardens and awaiting dinnertime. The rooms are spacious and elegant. We certainly felt like royalty. We do not typically spend a lot on dinners, but I must say this meal was by far the best meal we've experienced to date, and was so worth the cost. I requested a vegetarian meal and was surprised by all the flavors incorporated in a dish with asparagus, tomatoes, potatoes, and leek. It was a 4 course meal and included a cheese plate, which I could not bear because of the strength, but if strong cheese is your thing, you'll love it! Dessert was incredible, of course I managed to polish it off! My boyfriend had seafood for the first and second course which he continues to talk about. The chateau is a wonderful spot to relax all weekend, but you could also drive into the village nearby to shop and dine. We also drove 30 minutes to the Atlantic ocean which was an amazing experience. Overall, I would give this place 6 stars for superb hospitality and for an unforgettable experience!

“all the way to France just to stay here and will do it again”

We returned after 3 years and this is our favourite hotel in the world, period. The hospitality is extraordinary and you feel like you have a friend who just happens to have a small castle and fabulous chef. It is definitely a place to relax rather than for intensive sightseeing but it is really very romantic, quiet and special. Guests must love dogs (Irish wolfhound and cute little fluffy dog both provide their own warm welcome).

“Elegant Country House full of traditional French charm”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2010

This was our 6th visit to Chateau de Talhouet over the past 8 years and its still remains as charming and elegant as it was on our first trip. The owner, Jean Pol ensures first class personal service and nothing is too much to ask for. The Chateau is situated in the country on about 40 acres of gardens, fields and woodlands. It’s so peaceful and relaxing but is an excellent base to tour Brittany. The bedrooms are very spacious. I have attached photographs of some the bedrooms we have stayed in over the past years and you can see the opulence throughout this renovated historic building. His chef arrives every afternoon with fresh local produce and cooks the most exceptional cuisine. All 4 courses are worth waiting for, especially the local cheese board. His wine selection is very reasonable and well thought through and after dinner what better way to finish off the evening with a large brandy in the magnificent sitting room dominated by the grand open fireplace. I have delayed writing this review for many years, trying to keep this magnificent hideaway secret, but Jean Pol deserves the credit for managing a very romantic, first class country home. I expect we will return again next year and the year after........

“Calm, relaxing, comfortable and authentic atmosphere”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 July 2010

We arrived at Chateau Talhouet following a six hour drive from the bordeaux region tired, hot and in need of serious chilling. Within moments we knew it was the right place for us; a nice welcome, lovely rooms, the two dogs, plenty of cool, calm space. We spent two nights and had dinner there both nights which was very good; breakfast is also good. The reception rooms are a delight and it was also nice to socialise with some of the other guests prior to dinner. The grounds are lovely, not overly manicured and perfect for tramping around in. We both loved the building and its characterful details; the country side around is very pretty, lush and wooded. Rochefort en Terre is worth a visit, a little kitschy for us in places but fun for a couple of hours. We'd both love to go back to Chateau Talhouet though.
