“Rather disappointed”

We stayed int the Chateau de Brelidy for two nights in June 2007. The Chateau is lovely and in an imposing situation. We received a very nice welcome. We had not planned to stay there so we were a last minute booking. We were offered the suite which was the only available room. (117 euros per person per night). The suite was made up of the old chapel and a room above which was up 29 steps. Do not book the suite if you have any health problems. The sitting room area in the chapel could not be used as it was very damp and smelt very strange. The bedroom itself was very nice with lovely views but it could not be called a suite. Breakfasts were very good but we did not enjoy the food on either evening. In fact my husband and I felt that it was some of the worst food we had eaten in France. Choice was very limited, it was not well cooked and the presentation of the food was unusual. We were prepared to pay the cost of the suite for a bit of luxury for two nights but we felt that we did not receive value for money at all.

  • Liked — Comfortable bed
  • Disliked — Described as a suite - it was a damp chapel with a room up some stairs at the top

“Excellent chateau with great food”

This is a lovely hotel in an old 16th century chateau, outside a small town. It's well signposted, and the arrival up the long drive is impressive. A great welcome, showing us where everything was and directing us to our room, reinforced our initial good impressions.

As detailed in another review, there appear to be a number of types of room, with some that look very atmospheric. We too were in the ground floor annex, with a lovely patio area with chairs, and the room was very pleasant and comfortable.

We had time for a dip in the above average sized hotel swimming pool before dinner, which was very relaxing. The swimming pool itself is great, but the changing/bar/seating area has seen better days.

We were booked on a halfboard basis, and felt that this was very good value for the two of us. This entitles you to the 35Euro menu, which is the top priced menu. The food was exceptional, using local produce and seafood, very well prepared and tasty, and the wine list was very good, with some of our favourite producers available. The only downside to the menu was that we got the impression it didn't change too often, so if you were staying for more than a couple of nights you would exhaust your choices. The dining room is quite formal, but the staff are still quite relaxed and willing to talk and share a joke.

Breakfast was good, served in a different room to the dining room, and was a good start to a day sightseeing the Pink Granite coast.

Overall a very pleasant stay in a quiet character chateau. We will be visiting again I'm sure.

“Excellent but choose the right room”

Chateau de Brelidy is beautifully situated outside a small village some 10 miles north of Guingamp near the North coast of Brittany. Excellent for touring to the "granit rose" coast near Tregastel and the magnificent Ile de Brehat, the most beautiful small island we have even been.
The castle has several types of rooms but we were disappointed to have been booked in one of the ground-floor rooms in a sidewing. The rooms were very dark, only doors to the terrace but no windows. Of course having an own terrace is definitely a plus. The breakfast, be it not cheap, was excellent and dinner was of high quality. The atmosphere in the restaurant is a bit formal but not unpleasant. Upstairs in the castle is a lounge but we did not see many people sitting there since one feels a bit lost there.
Ample parking space. Very nice pool and jacuzzi. Beautiful walks in the surrounding woods to a lake.

  • Liked — Central situation for coastal visits
  • Disliked — room, bit formal atmosphere
  • Tips/Secrets — watch the type of room you book
