“Quiet and charming, if a little out of the way”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 October 2009

I just read other reviews of this hotel, some a little negative, and cannot believe we were at the same hotel. Perhaps we were just lucky with our assigned room, but we really liked the place.

The desk clerk had good English but was a little formal. The small parking lot was full when we arrived so my wife stayed with our car which was blocking other cars in the lot. When I explained this to the desk clerk, he disappeared for a minute, returned, and said that the owner would move her car across the road so we could park in the lot!

Our room was very clean, spacious, well appointed, and with a large comfy bed. We found it quite charming and a nice change from other hotels we had used with a more chain like feel to them. Really, we thought it wonderful and would stay here again.

There was no AC but on a rainy day in May we didn't need it.

We had two complaints....there was no lift and we were on the top floor. At my age and with my knees, I no longer consider this quaint. It shows how well we liked the room, tho, that this is our main complaint.

The second complaint is that the charming ceiling did not allow a stand up shower.

Some of our most pleasant memories of travel are from hotels such as this. If we wanted everything to be U.S. familiar and U.S. easy, we should stay home.

We thought the price was fair compared to other hotels of similar quality and breakfast was included in the room price.

Food was good in the restaurant but service was a bit slow, but this is France and the restaurant was busy.

If you are a car nut, while you are in the area you should visit the Schlumpf car museum, also know as the Cité de l'Automobile, in Mulhouse, Alsace. Tons and tons of exquisite Bugattis, with a few others as well, and a fascinating history.

“Beautiful setting”

The hotel is picturesque but a bit old fashioned and needs updating. The rooms are a reasonable size and we had a lovely view of the garden from our window. We were on the second floor and there was no lift. A member of staff offered to help carry our bags. The internet works via dial up and we were not able to get it to work. The bathroom can do with updating. The was only a bath and hand shower and the soap was quite high on the wall. We had a lovely meal in the restaurant. The portions wer rather large but well presented. Breakfast was included and a reasonable variety was available. You could have cooked extras at a small cost. I was under the impression the hotel had an indoor pool but it was not offered but we did not specifically ask either)

“Very pleasant. (Really!)”

We obtained a garden room (ask for those on the ground floor facing the rear lawn for a tranquil view) for 5 nights at about 85 euro/night. The room was comfortable with a good bed. Wifi is not very stable but they lent me a fixed ADSL modem - excellent. Staff were helpful at all times. The restaurant serves large portions so be careful - you can choose from anywhere on the menu, which is nice. It can get slow when full and the head waiter/manager is a bit Basil Fawlty - too fast and too much to do! Breakfast is continental but there is lots to eat and taking it on the front terrace is very pleasant. Yes, there is the crazy golf, but just ignore it, who cares? Chill out everybody. ;-)

“Excellent in many ways”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 November 2006

This very attractive small hotel is set adjacant to a quiet road through the woods, a few minutes drive from the nearest town. You can walk straight out of the hotel onto signposted walks around the woods. Parts of the hotel have been superbly refurbished, so the key element to a successful stay is to request one of the refurbished bedrooms in the main part of the hotel. The receptionists are most helpful in this respect. Click on "discover our rooms" on the home page to see pictures.

Our refurbished "Grand Confort" room was spacious, very attractively decorated to a high standard, and very clean, as was the ensuite bathroom. We peeked into a Suite, and it looked gorgeous. For those of you who are shower fanatics, you may be somewhat frustrated that the shower incorporated in the bath is handheld rather than wall mounted - a disappointing design fault. I decided it wasn't the end of the world, the rest of the bathroom was so well done. The corridor for the rooms was equally attractive refurbished, and the bedroom doors have exquisite painted decorations in the local style - see the photo on the homepage of thehotel's website.

The Restaurant and Lounge areas have also been refurbished and again to a very good and attractive standard in keeping with the alpine hunting lodge style of the hotel. We ate in the Restaurant on two evenings , were impressed with the varied menu choice, and delighted with the very high standard of the food served - quite superb. The wines too were excellent.

Breakfast was fine - there was a very good variety of cold foods offered. However, you may have a delay in the queue for the coffee machine which could only make one cup at a time, and was slow, though it did make very good coffee. The proprietors should consider making a fresh cafetiere for each table as the guests arrive, it would be a big and easy improvement.

Throughout our stay the service could not have been bettered, all staff were most welcoming and helpful.

When staying in the main hotel, there are two areas you will encounter which have not yet been refurbished, the stairway up to the first floor bedrooms, and the breakfast room. Yes, they are somewhat shabby, and yes, the windows do need cleaning - but you will be so pleased by the other areas, you probaby won't mind too much. Hopefully the proprietors will tackle these areas in the next stage of their investment in this attractive hotel, and we wish them the best of luck, they deserve it!

“Silence”

Looking at their website we thought that this would be a really nice hotel. We found the rooms which were certainly not their cheapest to be fairly ordinary. The hallway looked shabby with scuffed wallpaper and chipped paint work and the windows could have done with a good clean. The whole place just looked tired. On the plus side the staff were all very pleasant and the hotel is in a very pleasant wooded area but we wouldn't rush back.
