“Simply perfect”

Our best stay in Namibia. Highly suggested to anyone who is interested in visiting the Etosha park. Attached (literally) to one of Etosha's gates, it's our recommendation for a 3 days long visit at the park.

The rooms are beautiful, with nets and AC, bath with big windows and sublime patio.

The restaurant is on a beautiful terrace and the food is excellent.

We really enjoyed this place. We had an excellent stay.

Only negative note: during the rainy season do not go on too many game drives and enjoy more your room, the swimming pool and the lodge itself instead.

“Stunning view. Poor food”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2010

We spent two nights at Ongava Lodge. When we arrived we were greeted with cool flannels, drinks and a lot of porters. The view was spectacular, to have a water hole which boasts a vast array of animals is quite something. The hide, which was free, was an amazing way to get close to black rhinos. All the staff were very friendly. Our guide on our safari was very knowledgeable and approachable. The rooms were brilliant. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very clean. Our only criticisms were that the food was not up to the standard of the lodge generally and the price is very high compared with other lodges.

“More wildlife than a David Attenborough documentary”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

Stayed here 3 days with my brother who lives in Namibia. The purpose of our trip was to do safaris and see all teh wildlife Etosha has to offer. Well, we weren't disappointed! We were taken on numerous safaris and our guides really did everything for us to be able to see all the big game that is out there. We saw dozens of lions (with cubs some of which were very close to the jeep), elephants, rhinos (white and black!), and all the other animals you'd hope to see (no cheetahs - but hey, ho).
Facilities are ok. Pool is small and not very nice. However, the restaurant with view of a watering hole is just perfectly located (although the food is maybe a bit average for the price). All in all very good but very expensive!

“Huge rooms and loads of game”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

Very happy with this lodge. The rooms are huge by the Wilderness "Classic" camp standard. Only problem is the shower is totally unenclosed and open to the rest of the room, not even a curtain. This means the bathroom floor gets very wet and you need to be very careful about not slipping on the polished concrete floors - I did slip but was not seriously hurt. The food is pretty much similar to most of the "Classic" camp standards. There was always a choice on offer. The game both in Etosha itself and in the Ongava game reserve is plentiful with loads of photo opportunities. Activities include game drives and game walks with a armed guard.
The beds were very comfortable and the rooms have AC.

“The biggest disappointment of our trip to Namibia - would not recommend.”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 August 2010

We were in Namibia on our honeymoon and stayed in a number of places during our trip. This was the most disappointing by far and we would not recommend it to anyone. The location of the lodge is very good being just at the entrance of Etosha National Park and the private game reserve is also very good. In fact, we were very lucky on our first afternoon there to meet 6 lion cubs playing with each other whilst waiting for their mother to return. The guide was excellent - very friendly, accommodating and welcoming. Unfortunately this is the only good thing that we could say about the Lodge. We were informed when we arrived that the food would be a buffet each evening because there were "only 11 guests so it was easier that way". The next place we stayed in there were only 5 guests but apparently that chef thought it was worth the extra effort. The food at the Lodge was appalling. It was put out up to an hour before we were "called" to dinner and left sitting in the buffet servers whilst the chef sat and watched the World Cup just off the dining room. The World Cup was apparently put on for the benefit of the guests but it was only the staff who were watching it. We were on our honeymoon in a remote country to enjoy the wildlife and had to instead listen to Valenzuelas all through our meal. We went back to our room early that evening just to get some peace.
The booking was clearly for a double room and yet when we arrived it was clearly a twin. My husband spoke to the general office the following morning and was firstly informed "we don't have any double rooms". When he pointed out that the leaflet in the room states that they have 4 doubles, the explanation then changed to "we didn't know you wanted a double and a twin is bigger anyway". The twin beds were made up as singles and just pushed together - not ideal for our honeymoon. That night, our waiter came over to us to offer us a drink "with their complements" but he didn't seem to know why he was offering it to us. We can only assume that this was supposed to be as an apology for the room booking as the manager (who was on site) clearly didn't feel it was important enough to come over and speak to us directly! The room itself was very poorly maintained - the light by the bed was broken and the lampshade in the bathroom was also damaged. The shower flooded the bathroom which seeped into the rest of the room. There was also an additional resident in the room in the form of a mouse. Whilst we were in the middle of a game reserve and would expect there to be wildlife around, it was clear that this mouse was actually living in the roof above the bed and had left droppings all over the bed. This is not what we would expect for the price.
The game drives into Etosha we later found out were charged at double the rate of other camps. All in all it was a very disappointing experience and thank goodness we were only there for one night. Everywhere else we stayed in Namibia was an amazing experience - so there are plenty of other places to choose from.

Our apologies if your visit to Ongava Lodge did not meet your expectations. The televisions were in camp solely for the period of the 2010 World Cup which was a very important event for the African Continent and we are sorry if this event impacted on your stay as that would not have been the intention. They have since been removed from the lodge. Unfortunately we do not know the dates of your stay or your name so we can’t comment specifically on the food but please rest assured that your concerns have been noted and a concerted effort has been made to ensure that the food at Ongava Lodge is of a consistently high standard. We do have a limited number of double rooms available at the lodge and if we are not advised of a guests’ requirements in advance, we cannot always guarantee or provide a double. Your housekeeping concerns have also been addressed with staff and more attention will be paid to the detail. Thank you for taking the time to share your concerns and provide feedback – we do appreciate being given the opportunity to take the necessary corrective action. We are also pleased to hear that your game-viewing experience was good and that you had a great guide – we will be sure to let our guides know.
