“Good desk staff, but this is NOT the best place to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

It's always a challenge to book a hotel room. There are times when your experience doesn't match up with that of others. We absolutely needed a location to stay. Despite a number of less-than-positive reviews, we booked a room at this location anyway. The desk staff was superb. But the room was borderline awful. Bedding was old and faded -- it looked dirty but wasn't. Beds were low to the floor. Both beds had sagging mattresses, and the metal frames could easily be felt through the sheets. We didn't get a good night's sleep. The wireless was awful; the strength was so low that we couldn't log in. It took us about an hour to get the problem corrected. (My husband eventually logged in to the wireless offered by a nearby hotel; that was the only one he could get into for awhile.) The desk clerk gave us the number of a help desk, which was minimally helpful. And the desk clerk re-set all routers, which allowed us to use very slow wifi service. Cable offerings were minimal -- much less than should have been available for what we were charged for our 1-night stay. The continental breakfast seemed more impressive to staff than to anyone staying at this Best Western location. There was very little food set out, and it didn't look appetizing. (I might have worked to have a hard boiled egg, but there was no salt and pepper on the cramped counter.) We were able to unload/load our car by going out a patio door to our first-floor room. (We asked for a first-floor room.) But we didn't feel particularly safe when we saw the frame of the patio door was breaking away from the wall. It was good to be able to engage a metal bar to help secure the door, as we didn't fully trust the door lock. It was difficult to believe the hotel was part of the Best Western chain, given the poor condition of bedding in the room, the rip in the carpeting of the room, the small number of cable stations available, etc. Most disappointing -- the condition of the room did not match the level of service we received from the desk clerk. The room charge was far too high given the condition of the room.

“Good if you're on a budget and not looking for luxury”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2010

My daughter and I stayed at this Best Western during our trip to the Detroit Zoo. When we got to Detroit, it was pouring rain and the hotel staff let us check in really early. I was thankful for the hotel's indoor pool. We spent a lot of time there... it was clean, the water was comfortable (not cold). The arcade that is advertised on the hotel's website is really just 4 arcade-style video games off the pool area, so not what I was expecting. The fitness center was nice and in working order. The hotel is decent, mostly clean. There was some dust around the tv on the tv stand, but otherwise it was clean. The bed (we had a king room) sagged in the middle, but was comforable. I loved that the room came with a fridge and a microwave... My daughter got a kick out of that... lol. There's a mall, plenty of restaurants, a CVS Pharmacy, and a Meijer supermarket nearby. Thankfully, the next day the weather cooperated and we went to the zoo :) Even though this hotel is far from five-star standards, I'd stay here again.. and probably will the next time we venture to this side of the state to visit the zoo.

“Friendly Staff, Very Helpful!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 June 2010

The rooms, and parts of the hotel, were recently renovated as told by the lady at the front desk. The staff was very friendly and helpful. they gave me and my wife direction to where I needed to be. We were in the Madison Heights for a shopping experience since both Oakland Mall and The Somerset collection were close by. There was a variety of fast food experiences near the Hotel The rooms were actually quite nice. I liked the staff the best. I didn't like that the hotel was hidden and secluded in the back. The rate was lower than most.

“We didn't even stay”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 January 2010

We booked this hotel online. We had planned a weekend getaway with another family. There were 8 of us total, 4 adults and 4 children.

We pulled into the parking lot, and were immediately concerned to see a hotel room with it's curtain open, that looked like it had been ransacked. We could see garbage from one end of the room to the other and a scantily clad man sitting on the bed which had no sheets on it.

We thought it might be a long term rental room (turned out it was). We went to the front counter and advised the clerk our rooms were pre-paid. We wanted adjoining rooms, or at the least side by side rooms. As it was Feb 15, the girl advised all her rooms were booked the night before and they were not all cleaned. It was 5pm in the afternoon. She did not have any adjoining ones but provided us with two that she thought were cleaned and across the hall from each other.

We went to the rooms. The first one was dirty. We asked for a new one. She gave us a second room, it had a fridge that was all molded out and the ceiling was caving in around the window. There was also a funky smell emanating from the bedspread. And as mentioned in the other posts, the carpet was dirty...like it has never seen a carpet cleaning solution. The family's other room was even worse! The lock on the door fell off upon entry and the 4 year old noticed no cover on the electrical outlet.

So we went to the front desk to complain for a second time. The girl provided us an upgrade and moved us to the jacuzzi suite with one bed. Remember there were 8 of us. The room smelled like it had been "used" the previous evening for Valentine's Day.

While we were at the front desk, a hooker walked up and asked for the location of a specific room. Yes, we know it was a hooker, there were no doubts.

At that point, we all looked at each other and decided it was not worth the pre-paid amount, which was non-refundable.

The front desk girl was crying stating this had never happened before. She took our phone number and promised to have the manager call us to rectify our bill. After a year, we are still waiting for that call.

We ended up at the Drury Inn down the road - mold free, hooker free and free beer. What more could you ask for!

Next time, we will use trip advisor before booking..wish we had done it prior to this experience.
