“Okay One Night Stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2011

We booked two rooms at the Best Western for a one night stay for a post-Christmas shopping trip.

Check-in was delayed as there was some confusion on the hotel's part. We had planned on using credits on a travel card to pay for the rooms. When the reservations were made through the travel card company, we were told that everything was in order and we needed to show the card with the credits upon check-in.

However, the travel card company did not mention this to Best Western so this caused confusion and extra paperwork. This was a miscommunication between the travel card company and hotel which was not our fault but the clerk checking us in implied that it was and his attitude was not appreciated. Also need to mention that in the middle of dealing with the check-in issue, the clerk started talking about us in a foreign language to his buddy and we were standing right there.

Once everything was sorted, we were assigned 2 adjoining rooms with 2 double beds on the second floor. The rooms were a good size and we liked that each room had a small bar fridge and microwave.

A continental breakfast was provided free of charge and it included warm waffles, cereals, yoghurt, toast/bagles, pastries, coffee/team and juice. It wasn't a huge spread but it was nice to a little something before we hit the road.

We eyed the indoor pool but did not have a chance to use it.

Location of the Best Western was very close to the Oakland Mall and it's about a 15-20 min. drive to Great Lakes Crossing.

Upon check-out, we had to request for a copy of our bill twice. The same employee who checked us in was reluctant to give us a copy on the first request and only did so at the pressing of a second request.

Overall, we had a decent stay at the Best Western but front counter staff could use an upgrade on customer service.

“Good Hotel For The Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

My family and I stayed a night here for a quick stop over. For under $50, this place was all we needed, clean room with 2 beds, an indoor pool for the kids, and free breakfast.

The rooms were average size, not large but not tiny. It was a cold night and the heating system worked perfectly. The indoor pool kept the kids occupied for an hour, however a hot tub would be nice, as the room that the pool is in is rather chilly.

The beds and pillows were comfortable. The room and bathroom were clean. The shower head was awesome, nice and big with good pressure, not like those puny cheap shower heads at other hotels.

The front desk staff were friendly and pleasant. Breakfast was good. They have cereal, donuts, waffle station, toast, milk, juice, coffee, etc. We got there a little late (15 minutes before it was done) so the selection was minimal, we got the last of the waffle mix and there were only a couple of donuts left, however the staff refilled the donuts, which was nice. The orange juice was terrible, very concentrated and the only other juice they had was a very sweet fruit punch so it would have been nice to have a bigger selection of juice.

Overall, we were satisfied with the hotel, couldn't beat the price.

“Loved it--would recommend & stay again--no complaints!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 September 2011

My husband, my 3 year old daughter & I stayed here after our day at the zoo. We stayed 2 nights. We didn't have one complaint. Come on for 53 dollars a night--it compared to the Royal York in Toronto for $200. The rooms are small-but that is fine--ours was clean, & the second day when we got back-our room was all clean & new towels etc. Our air worked perfect.
Flat screen tv, lots of movies on. OK this pool was the warmest--actually it almost felt like a hot tub--a nice surprise compared to all the hotels we have ever stayed at that say they have heated but is soo cold. My 3 year old & I loved it--spent lots of time at the pool-& it was never crowded. The staff were over the edge friendly--always saying how are you & if we needed anything. When we first checked in I changed our room 3 times--just because I wanted close to pool for my daughter--& the front desk girl --was a super help--very personable--& didn't mind catering to us..
The breakfast--was great--no scrambled eggs & bacon--but that is ok for 2 mornings, my daughter loved the little cereal packages & fresh fruit, real oj, lemonade, coffee, fresh waffles, doughnuts, bagels, toast--ok how could you go wrong for that price--free.
I would stay there again but we are from Ontario --so next time we will just shop & stay at the Best Western at Port Huron. & if I was going to go to the zoo again we would still stay at Port huron--& just drive so the next morning we could just get up & go across border-although the Great Lake Crossing outlet was sweet.
but shopping at Port Huron is just as good!

Room Tip: I recommed 1 st floor near pool--if you like to swim.

“great place for a good price!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 May 2011

I stayed here on may 22nd, 2011 for one night. It was a saturday night and it was close proximity to shopping and our friends lived close by. Front desk staff was very friendly. Very comfy beds. The hotel wasnt exactly the Ritz Carlton but it was comfortable and clean. Right off I-75 so it was very easy to find. Would definitely stay here again next time I am in the Michigan area.

“Good desk staff, but this is NOT the best place to stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2010

It's always a challenge to book a hotel room. There are times when your experience doesn't match up with that of others. We absolutely needed a location to stay. Despite a number of less-than-positive reviews, we booked a room at this location anyway. The desk staff was superb. But the room was borderline awful. Bedding was old and faded -- it looked dirty but wasn't. Beds were low to the floor. Both beds had sagging mattresses, and the metal frames could easily be felt through the sheets. We didn't get a good night's sleep. The wireless was awful; the strength was so low that we couldn't log in. It took us about an hour to get the problem corrected. (My husband eventually logged in to the wireless offered by a nearby hotel; that was the only one he could get into for awhile.) The desk clerk gave us the number of a help desk, which was minimally helpful. And the desk clerk re-set all routers, which allowed us to use very slow wifi service. Cable offerings were minimal -- much less than should have been available for what we were charged for our 1-night stay. The continental breakfast seemed more impressive to staff than to anyone staying at this Best Western location. There was very little food set out, and it didn't look appetizing. (I might have worked to have a hard boiled egg, but there was no salt and pepper on the cramped counter.) We were able to unload/load our car by going out a patio door to our first-floor room. (We asked for a first-floor room.) But we didn't feel particularly safe when we saw the frame of the patio door was breaking away from the wall. It was good to be able to engage a metal bar to help secure the door, as we didn't fully trust the door lock. It was difficult to believe the hotel was part of the Best Western chain, given the poor condition of bedding in the room, the rip in the carpeting of the room, the small number of cable stations available, etc. Most disappointing -- the condition of the room did not match the level of service we received from the desk clerk. The room charge was far too high given the condition of the room.
