We arrived in Mackinaw City with no reservation. Stopped at the Best Western Dockside and inquired at the front desk about getting 2 rooms with a view of the lake. We were informed that they were booked and offered to contact other hotels for us. I have never had a hotel offer that before. The young front desk non american women called several hotels for us looking for a lakeside room. She located 2 rooms at the Fairview and handed the phone to me to speak with the front desk. The front desk worker stated that they had 3 water front rooms left and offered to hold our rooms with a credit card. When we arrived at the Fairview about 5 minutes later there were no cars in the parking lot. We asked to see the room and found it to be below our expectations in cleanliness and I didn't smell very good. We went back to the front desk and stated that we were going to keep looking. The non American front desk worker informed me that she was going to charge my credit card because I didn't allow a 24 hour cancellation. I contacted my credit card company to protest the charge. The only American owned hotel in Mackinaw City appears to be the Holiday Inn Express where we ended up staying and it was awesome!
