“Not a great experience, but will try again”

We've stayed here before with minimal trouble, but not overly thrilled. We decided to give it another try. The first night was fine, although we asked for a cot and there was absolutely no way the cot would fit in the room. We had to sort of stick the cot mattress between the two beds. The next morning the pool was closed. The only reason we were staying at a hotel was so we could get a quick winter getaway weekend to swim and use the hot tub. We were told that the chemicals were off and that it could be a while. When the pool was finally ready, it was ice cold. It takes about 12 or more hours to heat a pool that size. I personally wouldn't find it relaxing to swim in an ice cold pool. One of the managers, Neville, was fantastic. She tried her best to accommodate us. She said she would try to extend our check out time the next day and give us a little discount. That night, there were several children running, screaming, and bouncing a basketball until I had finally had enough at about 11:45 pm. I called the front desk and was told it would be taken care of. After 15 more minutes, the kids were still running around so I went out and handled it myself. The parents of these children had the two rooms across the hall from us and were in and out of their rooms, slamming the doors all hours of the night. Finally after we had just fallen asleep, the fire alarm went off. No hotel personnel had come by to tell us it was safe to go back to our rooms so I had to go to the front desk myself. Now while I understand it wasn't the hotels fault that parents don't control their children, I had to sign something saying that my child would be quiet by a certain time of the evening. Not that I would allow my children to be so disrespectful. The Holiday Inn should have insisted that since they didn't abide by the contract of controlling their children, they needed to leave. After getting about 2 hours sleep, the people across the hall started their door slamming again and we just decided to leave. I didn't want the extended stay at that point. I was disappointed that they do not enforce their own policies. Otherwise, this hotel is very nice. I just recommend that you do not stay on the weekends and you check to see how many birthday parties are going to be held there before booking your stay.

Room Tip: Do not get a room close to the pool. It is extremely loud and parents are not required to control t...

“Nice hotel but beware of room location and useless management.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2012

We stayed here one night for our son's hockey tournament at a nearby rink. The hotel was nice, clean, good restaurant, rooms were typical of a Holiday Inn. In general, it is a nice hotel. Pool area is a very attractive draw for families with children. Because we were staying with a hockey team, and several other teams were staying at the hotel as well, we signed an agreement upon check in that we wouldn't allow playing with sports equipment in the building and that "quiet time" was at 10:30, as was the closing time for children to be in the pool and the above rules would be "strictly enforced". We often are asked to sign these agreements when we travel with hockey, lacrosse and soccer teams and have no problem with it...except when the management refuses to honor THEIR end of the contract by not "strictly enforcing" the rules.

We had a 4th floor room that overlooked the parking lot, it was clean, nice and quiet. However, several families on our team were placed in rooms that opened directly onto the pool area. According to those families, there were numerous VERY LOUD people, children and teens hanging out by the pool until well after 2am. Several families called the front desk several times to complain about the noise from 11pm-1am, even going outside the room and staring down the people outside their room to no avail. After several calls the front desk finally said "What do you want us to do about it? There's nothing we can do." What is the point of having people sign the agreements if you are not going to enforce them? I have stayed in hotels many times where management has acted to quiet down loud obnoxious guests, even calling the police to quiet people down if they can't accomplish it on their own.

At 1:30 am one family, whose children were still awake due to the noise, finally went to the front desk in their PJs and demanded to move rooms. After initially denying their request, the hotel management finally gave in and begrudgingly relocated the family (who had 3 children under the age of 10) to another room on the 3rd floor at 2:00am. That room was silent and the family was able to finally sleep.

It is a nice hotel, but beware that the pool is located indoors in the center of the building and many rooms for several stories up surround the pool. The management was absolutely useless in ensuring that the majority of guests in the hotel were not disturbed by a few rude and inconsiderate guests who chose to party by the pool into the wee hours of the morning. What's the point of having us sign a page long "contract" and not enforcing it?

Next time we are in the area I would stay at another hotel because of the management's lack of concern or effort to ensure a good stay for all their guests. If I were to stay at this hotel I would want to be guaranteed a room away from the pool and would also inquire if there was a large group staying there, as large groups tend to congregate and get loud and obviously the management is not going to lift a finger to stop a few rude and inconsiderate hotel guests from ruining the stay of other guests. We were with a large group and it wasn't members of our group making the noise. Yet we paid the hotel thousands of dollars for a ruined night's sleep for many of our members due to the hotel management's incompetence.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the pool and ask if any groups are staying.

“Perfect Hotel!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

I travel for work frequently and always very much enjoy my stay at this hotel. As soon as I walk in the front door, the front desk staff always greets me warmly, and I am checked into my room with a smile.
What I love is that I am treated like I am the most important customer -As a priority club member I receive a gift bag in my room full of all of my favorite goodies! Even better is the priority club reception that occurs on Tuesday evenings, which is full of great appetizers and beverages.
All of the staff I have encountered is helpful, professional, and friendly. I would highly recommend staying at is hotel for anyone who needs to travel to the Kalamazoo area.

“Friendliness and Warmth”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

I have been traveling to Kalamazoo for business the last 3 years and the Holiday Inn West has become my hotel of choice. The front desk, housekeepers, maintenance, and restaurant staff go out of their way to make each stay comfortable. Whenever there are issues the staff goes out of their way to resolve it. This staff has set the bar for what I expect from other Holiday Inns and hotels.

“Far Exceeded Expectations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2012

I have had many issues with Holiday Inn in the past. This was my first stay in over two years due to an issue in Indiana. We brought our kids to a poolside room for the day before NYE (12/30-12/31). We expected it to be loud, dirty, and rude service due to the holiday. Right from the check-in, I could tell this place was different. Check-in was fast and courteous. I even got a goodie bag for being a Priority Club member! The room was cleaner and more up to date than I have ever had at a HI. Poolside room was quieter than I expected, and provided great convenience for the kids. The pool area was set up nicely and the kids really enjoyed it. Everything seemed clean and there were always clean, dry towels available. Staff was always present in case you needed anything. For food, Burdicks was amazing. Great prices and great selection. Food and service was awesome. For the money we spent, you couldn't ask for a better value. Extremely suprised and I would recommend this hotel to anybody. Other Holiday Inn's may be a different story...

Room Tip: Poolside room was very convenient for the kids. It was quieter than we expected, but you could hear...
