Certainly a clean and attended to property. Although we were in town for a family emergency and made our arrangements at the last minute, we were generally comfortable and pleased.
The hotel does bear all the hallmarks of having been an old Holiday Inn with all the shortcomings that connotes such as a somewhat pervasive chlorine odor throughout as a result of the large (what used to be called a Holidome) recreation/swimming area But if you're looking for a weekend getaway with young children, it's probably a nice setting.
There is an extensive room service menu until about 11:00 at night but if you don't want to eat in your room, the bar is the only place they serve dinners. The restaurant is open for a nice hot breakfast buffet at which we were, on one of our three days, offered omelet service. Perhaps if we had asked (we're not really omelet people) we could have had them on other days. Don't expect the typical Hilton smoked salmon, etc., but a nice hearty way to start the day nonetheless.
Plus I should note there are a couple of pretty large public lounge areas where insomniacs or early risers can read without disturbing those still dozing in their rooms.
One difficulty. Because of some temporary disability issues, we called the night before to get a description of the junior suite furnishings. Unfortunately the desk attendant gave us incorrect information. The room is indeed quite large but the bathroom is still old-style Holiday Inn tiny and there is just one upholstered chair in the room. It was adequate for our needs but not quite what we had been led to expect -- or really had asked for.
In addition they clearly don't rent out this premium room very often because the room was very musty smelling on the day we arrived. However, the next day after the daily room service, it was freshened up very nicely. It might be worth calling in advance to be sure they freshen the room before checking in. They seem to sell only a very limited number of their available rooms on any given night so this problem might repeat itself in other rooms as well.
In addition, one day we asked the maid to return for the room cleaning an hour later. Five hours later we had to chase down a housekeeping supervisor who tried to tell us we must have told them not to clean the room -- but finally agreed to have the room cleaned anyway even though she made clear that their failure to service our room must have been our fault.
So in general, this is a nice place and just a cut above average. Although they bill themselves as "Doubletree by Hilton" it is clearly far closer to the Doubletree standards than the typical Hilton expectations.
I should commend one really nice touch. After a typical overnight Holland snowfall they cleaned off the windows of our car early in the morning so it was ready for the day. Awesome and indicates that they really are "above average" even if some of the other things I've noted makes clear that it's really "just a cut" above.
I'm not certain what other options are available in the Holland area. We wouldn't rule out staying here again but if, on our next trip, we have a little more lead time we may well check out the alternatives.
