Three stars equates to "average" and that's pretty much what you get at this place. The location is what you'd hope for in an Express- its close to big box stores and the highways. The breakfast was the same as every other HI Express (call me weird, but I really like it). The rooms and common areas were clean. The internet was easy to access and fast. The pool/game area looked pretty cool- there was a hot tub that you could enjoy inside or out.

Now the things pulling it down...
1. Room selection. Despite being a diamond member and checking in at 4:45 PM, I was given what must be the worst room in the place. You open the window and look right into the game room. Therefore, you can't open the shades.
2. No flat screen- just a little old TV with a sad picture.
3. I was embarrassed for the fitness center. It just had a couple of tired weak treadmills (their steal frames rusting!) and a few other pieces circa the Clinton administration. The same TV that graced my room was jammed against the wall.
4. The hotel had at least three things telling me to give them a perfect rating on their HI survey if I should get one. If i couldn't rate them anything but "excellent", I was told to contact the manager immediately. None of my complaints are huge, but it certainly wasn't excellent. When I checked out, I told them everything was acceptable, but I couldn't rate them excellent. The counter guy seemed surprised even after I told him about the room selection and the needed updates. He got defensive instead of seeming to take a genuine interest.

In conclusion... I would have rated this higher if I was with my family and wanted to swim and play. However, I was there for business and just wanted a decent, quiet room and to get a nice work out in.

Saturday through Wednesday stay. Exactly as described on their website. Super clean, probably one of the cleanest hotels of this type I've ever stayed in. Staff is very nice. Housekeeping does an outstanding job. They do a good job with the breakfast provided, keeping it stocked and clean. I cannot stand hotels where the food runs out. If it says they serve until 10, then it should be stocked until 10. Eggs, cereals, pancakes, bagels, toast, coffees. Is it gourmet and made to order? No, but that shouldn't be expected.

Good location to Holland and the surrounding area. Amenities within walking distance though downtown Holland will require a car or cab. Plenty of parking and easy in and out. The deal they have to use the gym down the street was terrific.

I would stay here again and probably would have rated it "excellent" if the TV had been upgraded to a flatscreen and it had a full range of cable offerings, or a DVD player would have been great too. Holland's a sleepy little town with not a lot to do after about 7pm, especially on week nights. A way to have movies in your room, beyond the one channel of HBO, would have been terrific.

We paid close to $200 for one night at this hotel. If you're looking to be close to strip malls and chain restaurants, then maybe that's a fair price, but we were expecting a little more.

Let's agree that Holland is not a large town, so one doesn't expect spectacular lodging options. But I stayed there recently and had a pleasant-enough experience. For weekday business travel, this is probably a good choice. For a weekend romantic getaway, not so much. The hallways will be jammed with kids, as the swimming pool draws a lot of families. I think the target audience for this hotel is families with kids.
