“Terrible”

We recently stayed here for a night while visiting family in GR. We thought it would be a nice break to swim and go in the whirlpool. We were wrong. Check in took forever and only one person was working in the entire hotel on a Saturday night. We went to the pool and all the lights were out making it difficult to swim for the kids. There were no towels and the hottub was cold. When I told the front desk what was going on her reply was that she was the only one working and she was too busy to come and restock towels. I had no choice but to use our room towels and try and get new ones later. Well later when we went to the front desk to get some towels for showers, she said they didn't have any clean. Really? We had only been there about an hour or two and I felt like I was having a nightmare! The next morning we went and had breakfast. The breakfast was cold and not very good. We decided to go swimming after breakfast. The pool room lights were still broken, there were still no towels and the hottub was about 60 degees and overflowing everywhere. Once again I went to the front desk and the employee did not seem to care. I told her that the water literally over the top of the whirlpool was an accident waiting to happen. We still had no towels and I had to take some from the housekeepiong cart to dry off my child who was freezing from the cold pool and hottub! The shower was full of mold and I was disgusted by this fact. This hotel used to be great years ago, but definitely has gone down the drain. I would never suggest anyone stay here.

“Terrible service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 January 2012

I have stopped at this hotel twice now while on business in Grand Rapids. The first time I waited at the front desk for about 15 minutes while waiting to even see a hotel employee. There was however, a sign on the desk stating, "busy helping a guest". After being told they would be right back to help me, (must only have one desk attendant) I waited another 10 to 15 minutes before I just left without anyone coming back.

Recently I stopped again deciding to give it another try after over 8 hours on the road. I walked into the lobby only to again find a sign on the desk, "busy helping a guest". Needless to say I waited a couple of minutes with no one in sight and left for other lodging which there is plenty of in the area. They must give the guests a lot of help at this hotel. I will never know because I will NEVER stop at one of these again. This is just plain unacceptable service.

Room Tip: Stay in another hotel!!!

“Return Visit Not as Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2012

Returned here yet again for another business trip. I have to be truthful and admit I was not as pleased with my room this time around. The trash was not emptied from previous occupants, and the bath mat towel was hanging over the edge of the tub soaking wet. Since I was alone, I made due with the other towels. There is news reports of gang violence in the Grand Rapids/Kentwood area, so I'm very cautious and aware of my surroundings these days in that area. Overall, the hotel is still nice, but the economic downturn in the Grand Rapids area is resulting in some very real problems. I would suggest that they get better lighting in the parking lots, and make sure that the guest's security is a top priority.

Room Tip: Ask for room close to elevator on far end of the building, or a first floor room that's close to...

“unbelievable...”

I've stayed here at least 10 times over the past five years or so. When I first stayed here, it was a lovely place with great service, slightly dated but spotless rooms and common areas, and unparalleled value. The breakfast used to be great, served on real dishes, with fresh fruits and other items you rarely see at hotels at twice this price point. That is all in the past! The last time I stayed, the place felt tired and the breakfast had gone downhill significantly. But this time, the whole place felt dirty, the room we booked on the third floor was not available, and we were told that they "no longer had cribs." The lights in our room didn't work and the room smelled. My advice would be to stay far away. The only positive was that they gave a full refund. We quickly found another hotel.

“2 HORRIBLE STAYS NEVER AGAIN”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2011

I cannot believe the attitude in this place. There is no staffing. There is no maintenance. There is no cleaning of public areas. Oh did I mention the birds had no food? The insides of diaper left for 2 days in the pool. My daughter had already cleaned up the dirty towels, beer bottle caps and trash but drew the line at the diaper. She told every shift, but it took over a day to get it cleaned up. I had stayed and had a horrible experience with the pool being overrun and even not being cleaned up by checkout time, see the overrun trashcans, pizza boxes, etc of the other reviews. Well I gave a complaint to the management and then to Choice hotels. After the complaint to Choice I was sent a e-mail offering a half apology and an upgrade on next stay so decided to try it again (I know, I know). That was when my daughter stayed and had all of the problems and then some. Well we thought forget this place do not waste our breath. But then a charge came up on my credit card. I called and got no explanation but they finally agreed to reverse it (after I argued to get the girl to even look for the charge). Then they added the charge to my daughter's credit card. They told her she was not charged enough. She said you charged me, how is that my fault? Well anyway after complaining to Choice hotels again I got a letter TELLING ME NOT TO RETURN!!!! What, I had already told them neither I, my family or my frequent out of town guests would ever be staying there again. This is no way to run a hotel. I have never listed a bad review anywhere about a hotel. I am hoping Choice hotels will look into this, but I am starting to think Marriott is looking pretty good. In fairness I have had a couple of good experiences with Choice hotels this fall, but I am cannot believe they are letting places like this use their name. Think very carefully before using this hotel.

Room Tip: Find a room in a different hotel.
