“A great B&B experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2010

We couldn't have asked for a better getaway. The Harpers are great hosts and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived. This was our second B&B experience and was by far the best. Our fall trip allowed us to pick apples and bring them back to the house for cider making using Tom's hand cranked press. We helped collect fresh eggs for breakfast, hiked the trails behind the property and visited area attractions like Tahquamenon Falls and many antique shops . The family sheep provide Caroll with wool for her spinning wheel which she uses for her many knitted creations. Ask her to demonstrate and don't be surprised if you become a spinner yourself! Both Tom and Caroll have plenty of stories to share about their experiences growing up in the U.P. of Michigan. I think our next trip will be in the dead of Winter. I can't wait to snowshoe those trails.

“Farmhouse Indeed!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

We were traveling through Wisconsin on our way to Canada to see the fall colors. We were looking for somewhere to stop once we had visited the waterfall area near Dunbar and going next to Sault Ste Marie. "Conveniently located in the middle of nowhere" was their mantra and it is exactly that. However, it was worth the drive for the experience of staying on a farm owned by people who want just that! The farmhouse is lovely and located just off a main road and surrounded by a beautiful forest that was in full color when we arrived. Four sheep (Sugar, Spice, Naughty, Nice) provide a beautiful photo opportunity for guests while providing Caroll and Tom with the opportunity to sheer, card and spin their own wool. Caroll and Tom enjoy sitting at a lovely breakfast with guests and proudly share their experience of buying the old farmhouse and turning it into a lovely home and inn. Their new project is building an outdoor bread oven. A warm and friendly couple and a wonderful farm experience!

“Charming Bed & Breakfast in the UP”

I recently returned from a weekend trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula, and on one night I was lucky enough to stay at the Sandtown Farmhouse Bed & Breakfast. It was my first bed and breakfast experience and I cannot imagine a better one. This is a lovely bed and breakfast, with three guest rooms. Each of the rooms is comfortable and has a private bathroom. I stayed in the "Great Northern Room," which is decorated nicely with a "rustic" theme and boasts a king-sized bed. Do note that the bathtub/shower and toilet/sink are within the room itself (the toilet is closed off by a door), which was a surprise but not at all unpleasant. Perhaps the best part about this bed and breakfast are the owners and hosts, Tom and Caroll, who go out of their way to make your experience pleasant. Upon our arrival we were invited to enjoy the sitting room with tea and homemade cookies while we chatted and played Scrabble with the owners. Breakfast in the morning is made by Caroll and includes pancakes made on a wood-burning stove. The bed and breakfast is tastefully decorated with antiques and quilts, with the resulting effect being "homey" rather than stuffy. It is located 100 miles from the nearest stop light yet just an hour or so to attractions including Pictured Rocks and Mackinaw Island.

I highly recommend Sandtown Farmhouse Bed & Breakfast to anyone visiting the Upper Peninsula who would like to experience real "Yooper" hospitality. More information is available on their website
