My bride and I had a little post Christmas cash and I had a Cabella's gift card, so we decided to take our 3 kids (ages 6, 4, and nearly 2) on an overnight trip as a little getaway before the 6 year old was back to school. We booked a suite with a king bed and a bunk bed (separated by a half wall) and had the little guy in a pack and play. The room had a mini fridge and microwave, and was clean and nice. We've been blessed to have stayed at a lot of different properties in our 11 years of marriage. I contemplated 5 stars because we had so much fun and it met all our expectations, but gave it 4 stars overall because it's not the Four Seasons, it's a Holiday Inn with a waterpark attached. Great for our family fun, but don't expect your bed to be turned down for you. By booking online utilizing the waterpark webpage (Splash Universe), our room included waterpark passes for the day we checked in starting at 12 noon, and the following day (really nice value when you consider that would have cost us $240 for two days of passes and we paid around $250 for the package). We arrived around 1PM (hotel check-in time is 4PM), but our room was ready which was a nice bonus to get our stuff moved in and dropped off.
The waterpark was very clean and nice. It was perfect for the ages of our kids. I read an earlier reviewer comment that they thought ages 10 and under would love this waterpark, and I would agree. I think middle school ages and up might want some more thrills that a larger park could offer (we've only been to two other waterparks- the Double JJ near Muskegon, MI, and Aquatica by Sea World in Orlando, which is outdoors and amazing).
After having pizza in from Riverside Pizza (#1 Trip Advisor Recommendation and I agree!), we headed over to Cabella's (literally a 9-iron away from the hotel) and dad got to spend some money on ice fishing gear and the kids were able to enjoy the aquarium of fresh water fish and taxidermy. I think having Cabella's right here is an added bonus for a short family getaway, and it seemed like downtown Dundee had some nice local shops that my bride would enjoy if she had time to shop.
The only subpar experience was the restaurant, where we ate breakfast. It just took awhile for our food (we did show up at 9:15 and it closed at 9:30, so that was on us) and I thought the portions were a little small. My kids can knock out pancakes with the best of them, and the 2 on their plate and 1 slice of bacon was lacking. But kids also eat free, so that made up for it as our breakfast was really inexpensive. But I think if I were doing it again, I would head next door to Bob Evans (there is also a Lone Star Steakhouse and Applebee's within walking distance if you're thinking about lunch or dinner, although I would send you down to Riverside Pizza).
All in all, we really enjoyed our stay and will probably do it again some year. The combination of a water park and Cabella's, and a clean room made for an excellent stay.
