“Great Location, Spacious Suites, $ Reasonable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 December 2011

I've stayed twice at The Antheneum, both times prior to an appointment at Karmanos Cancer Center. The hotel offers 'Karmanos-rates' to patients/families from out of town. The rate in March 2001 was $99- a steal!- and the rate last week was $149. The rooms are enormous, and could easily accomodate 4 people (2 in the king bed and 2 on couch). There are 2 levels to each suite- bedroom on farther, lower level; sitting room/bathroom on upper level closest to door entry. Very clean, 2 flat screen TVs (one for each level, but you really can't watch 2 diff channels at same time since they're not seperated by a wall.....), large bathroom that could easily fit 2 - 3 people at once, lighted closet with iron/ironing board. Nice touch in bathroom is connected vanity to sink with pull-out seat and lighted make up mirror. I usually sleep with earplugs, and had no problems with the noise, even tho my room was right across from the People Mover/Greektown Casino. The staff is quite friendly, valet is quick. Next door is Fishbones- no walking outside in the winters- quite the perk. Would stay again even if I'm not going to Karmanos.

Room Tip: Higher up and away from the casino.

“A little expensive for Business Stays, cannot complain about anything else”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Stayed there for about 2 days, in Nov 2011.

Neat and clean. Murals and paintings at the entrance are something special.
Complaint: not-too-god WiFi.
Food was consistently good. Shuttle service is made available if asked for.

Staff was friendly and helpful.

Location: Downtown Detroit.

The location for our business meeting was excellent - comfortable, with great service..

It's a little on the expensive side for business stays or long stays, but cannot complain otherwise.

“Pretty good value, thin walls”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 December 2011

My wife and I spent 2 nights at the Atheneum Suites Hotel over Thanksgiving. The standard suite was very spacious, with separate living room and bedroom areas, each with its own flat-screen TV. The bathroom was also very large, with fairly nice (but not necessarily "upscale") fixtures. However, the walls were very thin. We could hear our neighbors having conversations at normal volume. Also, we could hear lots of noise from the bars and clubs outside into the late hours of the night. I wish I had brought ear plugs. The hotel's location is good, convenient to Greektown's restaurants and the casino, as well as Ford Field and Comerica Park.

Overall, the Atheneum is a pretty good value for the location and the size of the suites, but bring ear plugs for the noise.

“Unexpectedly wonderful with a very cool room!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2011

Traveling to watch the Packers beat the Lions was a great experience but it was totally enhanced by our stay at the Atheneum. We got to Detroit about 3 hours before the game and the city was packed with fans. Yet they parked our car ands checked us into a lovely room at 9:30 in the morning; we didn't expect that. The room is exceptionally large with two levels. A living room area and a separate bedroom at a lower level. The bathroom is well appointed with a tub for two.

The hotel is perfectly located for going to a baseball or football game with the statiums being only a 3 block walk. There are many wonderful restaurants nearby in Greektown. The Casino is across the street so you will have a wonderful place to stay with much to do close by.

“Only stay here if you party all night!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2011

I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights in November 2011 with my young son. We were in Detroit for a football game and this hotel was within walking distance of Ford Field. The hotel is very nice, the rooms were clean, and the staff was friendly. The worst part of the stay, and of our trip, were the nights at the hotel. Our room was directly across from a nightclub that blasted its music so loud that it felt like it was in the next room. We could hear the DJ talking, word for word. The first night I called down to the front desk and was told the music would stop at 2am. However, it was 2:30am before it stopped, then it was a half hour of honking horns and drunk people partying. Soundproofing within the hotel wasn't good either; we heard the conversation of the people directly below us until approximately 3am. So we didn't get much sleep that night which is annoying when you pay $140 for the room. The next morning I asked to switch rooms so that we didn't have the same problem. The girl at the desk said that since it was a Sunday night, there wouldn't be any noise. I foolishly believed her. The music stopped that night at 2am. By the end of the trip, we were exhausted (especially my son) and it put a real damper on the things we were in Detroit to do. I'm not sure what the hotel can do to fix this, other than give families rooms far away from that side of the hotel. Or at least tell you when you book your room that you will be basically staying in a disco until 3am!!!!!
The breakfast buffet at Fishbones was HORRIBLE. It cost us $30 (no drinks) and this is the selection we had: 3 types of fruit sliced up; 1 type of egg (scrambled); soggy toast; good bacon; stale croissants; and overcooked potatoes/hash browns. Many people came in, looked at the selection, and left. We heard waitresses in the kitchen asking "whose idea was it to do the buffet, it's awful". If we hadn't been so tired from our sleepless night, we would have gone somewhere else.
On the upside, the free shuttle was excellent. It took us where we wanted to go and brought us back promptly. Shaq, our driver, was very helpful and friendly. He and his shuttle were the best part of our stay.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms that do not face nightclubs, especially on weekends.
