“Scary!”

Stayed at the Hotel St. Regis a few months ago, and was honestly tempted to leave if it weren't for the fear of what may be found on the other side of the door when leaving. First room we were assigned to had a very strong smoke smell, and was dirty, second room was adjoining to the strangers next door - large gap under the door allowed their entire conversations to be heard, which were not something pleasant to awake to at 2am when they came barreling in yelling about the fight they were just in downstairs, and the action they were about to take on these people if they ran into them - the patrons are NOT the fault of the hotel, but should not have been able to hear every word of a conversation. Was advised of timely shuttle by reception, waited 40 minutes from time we were told it would be there, when being dropped off, told to find your own way back - also different that what was told to us at reception. Washroom had peeling counter, only 1 (of 4) light bulbs working, and the elevator would stop unexpectedly and abruptly. Bed was OK, but stains on sheets and comforter were not appealing. When being dropped off by a taxi in the eveing (11pm) told it would be best to go straight to your room, and he pointed toward the abundance of people in the lobby. Cab stayed and driver stood infront of car until the elevator door closed.

Overall, would never go back - when discussed concerns with the front desk, the response was "I hope you enjoy your stay next time," waited 20 minutes for vehicle from valet, note we were the only ones waiting. Would not return

Room Tip: Don't go!

My stay at the St.Regis was excellent. I was there on business for the auot show.My room was very clean, and the staff was very friendly. However the hotel was not downtown but it was close enough.

“I have a soft spot for neglected beauties”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2011

This is a decent hotel, far from the action. That might appeal to some people.

The room was in decent shape, although I could have done without the cigarette holes on the comforter. I loved that there was both a DVD player and a an iPod charger in the room. The view wasn't much to speak of. The staff was very friendly.

The only real downside was that the front desk gave someone else my room key, and that person walked in on me in bed. It was awkward, and could have been very embarrassing. That should have been avoided.

Overall it's a very out of the way hotel, and you will need a car to get there and around. It's located next to a big Broadway-style theater, so you should check out a show if you're there. But if you're looking for a grand hotel, this isn't quite it. It was at one time, though.

“Ok to crash for a night or two, wouldn't recommend a longer stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 November 2011

You can tell that this hotel was once beatiful but is now outdated. The rooms were clean and it wasn't a bad place to stay for a night, but overall it wasn't worth the money. The rooms were HOT and the AC/Heat didn't work, the Continental breakfast was really bad and for some reason when I was there the fire alarm kept going off in the middle of the night (which is most likely a fluke and they comped our parking because of it, but it wasn't fun). 95% of the people that worked there were very friendly and helpful. The hotel is so far from downtown though that you have to take a cab if you want to go out. I guess for the price, I would just recommend upgrading to a hotel closer the downtown area.

“Great stay, would recommend!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2011

We stayed here when we went to Detroit for a concert. The desk staff was very friendly and the room was clean and really nice. We really enjoyed the upscale style with an affordable price. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in the downtown Detroit area. I read some reviews that said the hotel was in a bad area and we did not find that to be true. The area is about 7 blocks from the Fox Theatre and we had no problems feeling unsafe.
