I stayed here in April '11 for a conference. The hotel is located right on the shores of the river. Our room actually faced Canada and we had a great view of the Casino's there from the 43rd floor.
The hotel is actually a nice place, with lots of shops and great restaurants. But I couldn't give it more than average due to a few key issues.
First, no fridge in the rooms. To get a fridge, you have to request one. I actually requested one when I made my reservations. But when I got to the room it wasn't there. I asked again when I got to the room. The maintenance staff was really slow to bring it but it finally got there.
Second, the valet. Possibly the strangest valet I have ever seen. Its a very busy hotel, so you would think the valet staff would be more responsive, quick to get cars moving in and out - especially when there are usually tips attached. But they were the slowest valet crew I have ever seen. My wife and I had to stand outside waiting for some time, even when calling down first to arrange the car to be brought up. And for that, you pay $25 a day.
Other than this, I can't complain too much. It has direct access to the people mover, direct access to the "boardwalk" outside. One stop down from the hockey arena, 4 or 5 stops from Ford Field and the baseball stadium, right accross from Fox Theater. The levels will drive you crazy. It takes a good couple days to figure out which floor to get out of to access which service.
Theres a starbucks and a great italian restaurant on the premesis. The gym is actually not half bad. Rather small, and no free weights to speak of. But there is enough equipment in there (plus cardio machines) to keep you fit for your stay. Dont get tricked into paying a short term membership and the other gym on the ground floor. It wasn't worth it - if you're a serious lifter they don't have the major things anyway (barbell bench, squat rack, etc).
The hotel bar is alright, but if you're staying in downtown Detroit, I would head out into Greek town or something rather than stay in the hotel anyway.
All in all, not a bad stay. But not worth a "very good" or above.
