“Convenient with Great Views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 February 2012

Upon arrival we were greated by a very helpful valet. We then proceeded to check-in and that clerk was friendly and also helpful. A renovation to update the carpeting and room decor is needed but the view of the river more than made up for that. Plus it was so convenient for us. We ate at the bar and the food and service was good. Then we took the tram to our event. I would definitely stay here again! We love Marriott properties!

“Probably the best hotel in Downtown Detroit”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2012

I stayed here in April '11 for a conference. The hotel is located right on the shores of the river. Our room actually faced Canada and we had a great view of the Casino's there from the 43rd floor.

The hotel is actually a nice place, with lots of shops and great restaurants. But I couldn't give it more than average due to a few key issues.

First, no fridge in the rooms. To get a fridge, you have to request one. I actually requested one when I made my reservations. But when I got to the room it wasn't there. I asked again when I got to the room. The maintenance staff was really slow to bring it but it finally got there.

Second, the valet. Possibly the strangest valet I have ever seen. Its a very busy hotel, so you would think the valet staff would be more responsive, quick to get cars moving in and out - especially when there are usually tips attached. But they were the slowest valet crew I have ever seen. My wife and I had to stand outside waiting for some time, even when calling down first to arrange the car to be brought up. And for that, you pay $25 a day.

Other than this, I can't complain too much. It has direct access to the people mover, direct access to the "boardwalk" outside. One stop down from the hockey arena, 4 or 5 stops from Ford Field and the baseball stadium, right accross from Fox Theater. The levels will drive you crazy. It takes a good couple days to figure out which floor to get out of to access which service.

Theres a starbucks and a great italian restaurant on the premesis. The gym is actually not half bad. Rather small, and no free weights to speak of. But there is enough equipment in there (plus cardio machines) to keep you fit for your stay. Dont get tricked into paying a short term membership and the other gym on the ground floor. It wasn't worth it - if you're a serious lifter they don't have the major things anyway (barbell bench, squat rack, etc).

The hotel bar is alright, but if you're staying in downtown Detroit, I would head out into Greek town or something rather than stay in the hotel anyway.

All in all, not a bad stay. But not worth a "very good" or above.

“Good hotel, rooms need to be updated, awesome views”

This is a nice hotel and let's face it...most people come here for the views and the nightlife. It's in a good proximity to everything. Safe area. Coach Insignia up at the top of the Ren. Cen. is amazing. Staff is nice.

The only real drawback seemed to be the rooms. I think they need to renovate and update them, but overall it was definitely an okay place to stay.

“Reasonable, safe and convenient”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

The front desk staff was very efficient. It too two calls to get housekeeping to change out or down comforter and pillows for foam (allergies), but when they arrived they were as nice as could be. Gigantic closet. View of the Detroit River. We were at a conference in the Ren Cen, so it was nice to be able to park, stay and "confer" all in the same place. The rooms were nothing spectacular, but they were clean and decently appointed.

Room Tip: Ask for a view of the River, not the offices next door.

“This Hotel is downgrading itself”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 January 2012

I have stayed at this hotel more then 15 times since 2004 and unfortunately it is going downhill. Although the rooms were recently renovated (I think 2007-2008) the work was done poorly and things are beginning to fall apart. The two most recent rooms I have stayed in had stained carpets. My most recent stay here came with stained and torn sheets - they were washed sheets, but stained. Front desk blamed it on "the company we hire to do our laundry" but at the end of the day, I blame the housekeeping department for apathy in not noticing. Seriously - as you are making a bed, how do you not notice the sheets are torn?? This hotel does have an amazing view going for itself - benefit of being the tallest building in Detroit and a great complex with some great restaurants and a really great bar in the lobby called Volt. Unfortunately, the bar never has enough bartenders and the ones working barely pay attention to bar customers. I was with a beautiful blond woman and even SHE could not get service.
