“The Worst...”

My son and I stayed at this Inn while in town for our first visit to the city to experience the Detroit Jazz Festival. Upon checking out of the Inn and loading our things, we discovered that someone had smashed my driver's side window and stolen all of our things. I notified the front desk clerk and was amazed at how rude she was. She showed no emphathy and was not willing to allow us to use a vacuum cleaner to get all of the smashed glass out of the vehicle so that we could at least travel home in safety. She indicated that it was against "hotel policy". What a f*cking dump. No security cameras so park at your own risk. Patrons for the Clique Restaurant indicated to me that there are always break-ins each week and that was my official welcome to Detroit. I'll never stay at this dump again and would suggest that you spend the money and stay somewhere else where there are camera to protect your personal property.

“Cheap and three blocks from PeopleMover - Excellent value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2010

Shorecrest is 3 blocks from Detroit's monorail PeopleMover (50 cent rides) which connects to anything downtown. We have stayed here 2 different times for Comerica Park ball games (less than a mile from park, have easily walked it.) Free continental breakfast, courteous staff, working ice machine, a/c, running hot/cold water, free in lot parking, 1/2 block away (opposite direction from downtown - I think toward the north-east on Jeffferson) is a liquor store/deli, and the motel has a reputably popular dive breakfast/lunch restaurant attached.

The negatives is that it is not a 300 - 500 dollar room. It is an older motel and the price reflects it. We travel to Detroit not for the lodging but for spending the difference on the coneys and Greektown breakfasts and driving along the lake to Gross Pointe enjoying the mansions and for the brew pub stout and to watch baseball and to ride the monorail like Homer Simpson and to meet the great Detroit people. We have tried to stay near the old Tigers Stadium area (vacant lot now with the locals and a couple gates left to remind what once was- nothing to see- really) and that was a complete disaster (Viking).

“would not recommend this to anyone..”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 March 2010

i booked 2 nights here in a non-smoking room on the recommendation of someone. i was travelling on business and since this is like a very short distance away from the detroit-windsor tunnel, and i didnt want to waste time at night, i made reservations over the phone.

horrible! the lobby is pathetic, a room about 15x15 feet, with threadbare floors and sofas that are worn to the bone! this room also functions as their continental breakfast area, with no tables or chairs and some measly cold mini danish and mini bagels laid out on a 4' table! the owner behind the reception counter keeps a watchful eye in case you eat too much.

we were allotted a room with 2 beds but the carpet was worn, the sink in the bathroom was cracked and stood on 4 wobbly steel legs which were crooked and the whole thing looked as if it was to going to crash any minute. the worst part? the room smelled to high heaven of a mixture of cigarette and marijuana smoke.. it was so bad that we felt stifled and suffocated. although clean, everything was so ancient and used that we felt that as if we had stumbled into a wayside inn from a hundred years ago. the pillows were the worst i have ever seen in 30 years of travelling. they were like an inch thick, so flattened with use and useless as any form of support.

when we protested and insisted to leave, they showed us 2 rooms on the upper floor. a bit better than the previous one, but still smelling strongly of smoke. the lamps didnt work as their switches are loose and maybe about 20-25 years old. some had broken bulbs inside, not replaced as yet. since this is a motel, the rooms are open to the outside along an open balcony and with the snow and ice was very slippery. there are no security cameras or guards and at night only one person is on duty for the entire building at the reception. since it was almost midnight, we decided to remain but didnt change and went to sleep fully clothed, afraid of bed bugs.

in the morning, we hastily packed, had their crappy breakfast and moved post haste to a quality inn a bit north for 30% less price, with a hot breakfast, gym and business centre.

the owner was contrite about the smoke and charged us for 1 night only, but his problem is not the staff, but the age and extremely poor maintenance of the hotel. this building must be atleast 60 years old, not renovated at all and thus attracting drug addicts, drunkards and filthy rowdy guests.

i would never in a thousand years recommend this place to anyone!

“Stay at your own risk”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2009

My friends and I have stayed here for many years, often several times a year, mainly to its location by the highway. Its not near downtown, but east along a stretch of Jefferson that is trying to make a comeback, but has met the detroit way. First the rates have gone up. $92.00 for 3 people in a room a night, Just down the street is the 4 star Omni for $119.00 a night. The rooms are outdated with peeling wallpaper, dirty showers, dusty dressers, come on for $92. No way. Their is no security, so park your car at your own risk. One of ours was broken into, alarm sounded, but no one heared it. We had lost hubcaps in previous years, and have stepped on broken glass of other broken windows. The front desk said they have never had anything like that happen their. They made no appology , but they gave us $10.00 off one night , that was it , after staying their for the last 15 years.

“Horrible Beds!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2009

I find the Shorecrest to be a place one would lounge if he has very little money if the price was right. Rooms should only be $30.00 a night. Please do not book any rooms and pay for it before seeing them. The Doubles are a joke. Beds are leaning to one side, and had a big dip in the middle meaning the mattress are worn out. The rate is $90.00 a night. On top of complaining about the horrible beds, the owner Bruce, is a mean, unprofessional, uncaring person who don't care about the comfort of his customers, but the too expensive price he charges. He has a high turn over of clerks leaving because of his awful attitude. Do not take your shoes off, unless you want your feet to be filthy with dirt. People of some type of class, and with children do not need to go the this place. It's ashame because back in the early 70's this would have been the place to be at. I warn you, don't go to the Shorecrest. I can imagine all the hands dipped in the ice machine because theres nothing to use to put your ice in the ice bucket. Not sanitary at all, plus management hands has to be placed on your food in order for it to be microwaved. The place is next to being a dump.
