The natural environment offered by staying at a lighthouse is, of course, quite stunning, and the view from the top will not disappoint. As for the actual service and amenities, however, they do not stack up to the level of excellence proffered at most B&Bs.
Our room, advertised as the best available, clearly had not been dusted in months. There were cobwebs on the ceiling fan, the nightlight, and under the chairs, and dirt under the bed. There was a large cobweb on the door to the public bathroom near the main sitting area. There were at least two live spiders in our room, one settled into a web in one corner and another hanging out on the wall in another corner. I realize you are bound to have spiders at a lighthouse, but it didn't appear that the owners had made any concerted effort to keep them out of the rooms.
Other little things also left us unimpressed, such as the 2-ply toilet paper in the bathroom. That, combined with the owners selling off much of their lakefront property in plots, left us with the impression that they care more about profit margins than people. Interestingly, in the lighthouse history info provided for guest perusal, the owners described themselves as "avid preservationists" who had purchased the lighthouse and adjoining property for a bid well below that offered by a commercial enterprise interested in building condos on the land. At the end of the write-up, they sounded half-apologetic as they attempted to rationalize why they are now themselves parceling off the land for development. Rather than sounding justified, they only sounded like hypocrites.
As far as service, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't extraordinary either. The male proprietor offered little assistance as my wife, who had a broken foot, hobbled her way to and from the car and up and down the front steps. He seemed more interested in making sure the doors all stayed shut after we went through. As another reviewer wrote, he dominated table conversation at breakfast (which, by the way, was unnoteworthy). I wouldn't say he was especially rude, but he also didn't impress us as possessing the kind of people skills necessary for the job of innkeeper. The female proprietor wasn't much better. As I was leaving, I said we hoped we could return at a later date when my wife could better enjoy the lighthouse, and she responded -- jokingly, I assume -- that they would let us back if we behaved. That would have been fine, except that she then shut the door behind me without a further word of farewell, as I was still struggling down the steps with luggage.
Overall, I don't regret staying here, because the location makes it worthwhile by itself. However, it's obvious that the owners also realize that and use it to their advantage -- that is to say, they know they will have guests whether or not they bother with the little things, and so they choose not to bother.
Recommended for a one-night stay, but not for multiple nights or return visits. We will not return.
