“"A beautiful, special and romantic getaway and special celebration experience for us that we will never forget. "”

We had a wonderful, memorable visit to this beautiful lighthouse B & B this summer. I had been in the area about 15 years ago and had vowed to come back and stay in the lighthouse one day. It was lovely to finally return, actually spend an evening in the lighthouse and enjoy the off beat charm of the Big Bay area. The lighthouse is beautifully and tastefully restored and decorated. Also the innkeepers have made the entire lighthouse accessible to the guests, what a treat. We were able to climb to the top and sit outside as well as use the comfortable rooms of the house. From this perch we were able to see the full moon reflection shimmering on Lake Superior. Our bedroom, the Keeper McDonald's (recommended by the innkeepers) was absolutely lovely. I awoke early in the morning to the most exquisite sunrise glowing outside the four paned window by simply opening my eyes, unforgettable. The rooms are not huge as this is a historic building, but absolutely comfortable and charming. The grounds, though a little overgrown are lovely to roam around and enjoy the spectacular setting. I find some of the reviews here to be very odd, more like personal attacks. I think these reviews say more about the guests than the innkeepers. They have obviously been wonderful stewards of both the lighthouse and the community, so important in a remote place like Big Bay. People that just want to drive up and see the place should not be surprised that they cannot be accommodated. Also people that are asked to rinse out a ceramic mug that has been left for their use at any time, finding it so bothersome, good grief.
i would highly recommend this unique setting and experience to any hearty traveler. Though there is not a whole lot of things to do in the town, the area is filled with hidden surprises and undeveloped waterfalls for those who want to hike and explore. We also enjoyed our dinner at the Thunder Bay, our visits to the Big Bay Outfitters, bike riding and the beautiful rocky shores of Big Bay and and the always commanding Lake Superior.
A beautiful, special and romantic getaway and special celebration experience for us that we will never forget.

“A great visit”

We stayed two nights in the lighthouse and found it a great place to stay - the lake so close is, of course, a big plus. Our room was spacious, clean and well kept-and had heated towels. The breakfasts were excellent and we appreciated that coffee, tea and snacks were available all day and evening. The grounds were great for some short hikes or sitting on the benches enjoying the lake or reading a book. Hikes and great scenery were available around the Big Bay area. For a get away from the hustle and bustle of our modern lives, try the big Bay Light.

Room Tip: Keeper McDonald's room has great views of the lake and grounds.

“Very pleasant stay in a gorgeous environment”

The lighthouse is beautiful, well done and well kept. The host and hostess had lots of stories, history and a list of things to do and sites to see. We biked, hiked and ate two picnic lunches in the screened gazebo - gorgeous. The sunrises and sunsets from the top of the lighthouse were gorgeous. The sitting area and library were well suited to conversation - of which there was lots! Everyone gathered in the evening and before breakfast to chat and exchange travel tips. It was very fun and we met such interesting people. The breakfasts were absolutely amazing! Plus, every morning Linda made a special breakfast to accommodate my gluten allergy! I received everything everyone else received, only it was gluten free. Definitely went the extra mile!

“Innkeepers need a refresher”

The lighthouse is outstanding...very cool. The B & B beautifully decorated, warm and cozy, the breakfast fantastic, our room was lovely, the inn keepers not so much!

After we made the reservation we received an email confirmation with very strict instructions on what time we need to be there by. The email included the statement that the lighthouse was a "destination" and so on and so forth. I was taken aback by the restrictive check-in times, but kept an open mind.

However, upon arrival Jeff went through the ritual (that I guess he does for every guest) without enthusiasm or even a smile. At this point kind I felt that I was imposing (although I was paying) by staying in the lighthouse.

The history that they give of the lighthouse is great, but it is interspersed with their desire to retire, need to sell the property, $ of taxes. Guest are not interested in the wants or woes of the inn keepers. Same thing at breakfast...we heard way to much of their personal lives rather than the other guests'

Now about it being a "destination" as stated in their email. It could be but it is not. We already knew Big Bay only had a few hiking trails and that is about it. But we were just planning to spend our time on the spectacular piece of property and enjoy the view, the weather some reading . But there are very few places to sit outside, relax and just enjoy the scenaery. A few metal benches and that is it.

Spent time at other B & B's and these innkeepers should retire very soon.
