We booked a room sight unseen using the Choice Hotels catalog and when we arrived, it looked like a public housing complex, because that's essentially what it was. We stood inside checking in and heard a couple of young men arguing on a balcony, and it turned out to be a place where they rent rooms by the week, definitely not a family place to stay for even one night. They accepted dogs for $35, but when asked where we could walk the dog, they said "Out back in the woods." The motel is located in a less than desirable part of town, and wanted to charge us almost $200 for a "suite" while answering a phone call from an interested party by saying, "Yes, we rent the suites for $129 a week." We felt unsafe in the area and in the motel. We immediately canceled and the clerk, who had scanned our credit card, said she didn't know how to do a credit/refund and that would have to wait until someone came in the next morning. When I requested some kind of receipt for proof we would be refunded, she wrote down a cancellation number on a scrap piece of paper. She was polite but not reassuring. We drove 3 more hours to find another motel, as most were booked and didn't get one until 10 p.m. We would have rather slept in the car, if necessary, than stay at the Quality Inn in Worcester. It is fine for its apparent purpose as a quasi-apartment rental, but for a family motel it should not be listed in the Choice directory, and I've written a letter to the company suggesting that.
