“Charming”

The 1720 House was just right for our family – and our budget. We loved the feeling of staying in a home that was built in the early 18th Century. And, although this quaint B&B has retained its historic character, it still offers amenities like air conditioning, free wi-fi and modern bathrooms. Perhaps the most convenient feature was the location. We got off the ferry, walked a couple of blocks through the village of Vineyard Haven, and the 1720 House is right there, just steps away from shops, restaurants and public transportation. We even got a special off-season rate that was surprisingly affordable for Martha’s Vineyard.

“Delightful B&B - cozy, historic and a perfect location!”

We stayed at the charming 1720 House bed-and-breakfast in the winter, a few days before Christmas. The island was decked out with beautiful holiday lights and was delightfully quiet – none of the traffic or crowded restaurants and beaches of the high season. Our room was warm and cozy, spotlessly clean, and it had a view with a glimpse of the harbor. The hosts were friendly, attentive and helpful with suggestions for touring and nearby restaurants.

The location of the 1720 House is perfect – an easy stroll from the ferry landing, the charming boutiques and restaurants of Main Street, the Stop and Shop, the library, car rentals and just about anything else a visitor would need.

The 1720 House is pure Americana – not some sterile chain hotel or modern bungalow. The original wooden plank floors slope a bit here and there, doorways angle oddly, and the low beams in the living room continue to boldly brace the structure just as they have for the past three centuries. Antique furnishings tastefully decorate the cozy, freshly painted rooms, including six guest suites (three with ensuite bathrooms). Modern amenities include wireless internet, air-conditioning and television (in the living room). History buffs – or anyone who appreciates nostalgia -- will love the experience of staying in such a delightfully preserved home.

We thoroughly enjoyed long walks on the empty beaches in the morning mist, dining on lobster at a nearly-empty restaurant and touring the island to marvel at various examples of Cape Code architecture and occasional grand waterfront estates.

The 1720 House was perfect for our stay – excellent location, reasonable price, comfortable, historically interesting, thoroughly accommodating. We recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Three of the six bedrooms have "ensuite" bathrooms.

“Lovely Accommodation”

This was our first trip to the States and picked the 1720 House from the Internet and we were not disappointed. The house is lovely and the rooms clean and our bed very comfortable. Cheryle was very helpful and accommodating and Continental breakfast was delicious, with plenty of choice for cereal, fruit, yogurt etc. Would definitely recommend the 1720 House.

Room Tip: We stayed in The Lincoln Room which is on the ground floor, if you want ease of access.

“Once again a great stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

I stay at 1720 two or three times a year, combining business and pleasure. The location can't be beat, a 5 minute walk to the Vineyard Haven ferry (and downtown restaurants and shops), when I don't need to bring my car over and parking when I do. The host and her staff are extremely helpful, really in the know about the goings-on on the island and very generous in their time explaining what's what and how to get there.

It's a reasonably small B&B, so one has the feel of being a guest in a home, but plenty of room to spread out, including dining room, living room, porch, back yard with the most amazing ancient tree. Prices are excellent and the place immaculate.

Excellent.

Cheryle was great from start to finish. Our room was ready early. Out bathroom was updated and clean. Breakfast was simple but excellent, with lots of fresh fruit. We used two bikes to take a tour of the local area. Would definitely stay here again.
