“Reconnecting with old friends”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

We had the pleasure of staying at the inn reciently and wanted to brag about it, but had not thought of a reveiw online until remembering previous trips out of the country.

Having booked late, Thorncroft was the only place available on the weekend of the road race This concerned me, but my friend who lives on the island advised me it was charming and would enjoy it. I had concerns, but after talking on the phone with them during the reservation process I felt more at ease. Public transportation brought me to the door step right from the ferry. The outside was definitly period and true to island protocol. The inside was well appointed and comfortable. Prior to being inroduced to the room, I was presented with a tour of the building, advised of facilities available, and even discussed plans for my stay. The room was tucked upstairs; small but quaint. The fireplace was FANTASTIC for later in the evening. Bathroom was small with a shower stall and shower head which was appropriate for most people. Not for anyone 6'7" tall for sure. Television was small, but I was not there to watch TV.

My guest arrived and was escorted tot he room directly. We have been friends for 40 years, and fell out of touch but receintly reconnected. We found the ambiance of the room again FANTASTIC. After a marvelous steak dinner downtown, we returned for an evening of wine and romantic fire, followed by a great sleep on one of the most comfortable beds I have been on in years. Hot water was plentiful in the morning, and breakfast was tasty, warm and plentiful. My guest was a schoolmate of the innkeeper's wife, and spent much time reliving younger years and treasured memories. We stayed late and were disappointed to leave.

Would I return? The correct question is how soon will I return..

“Overpirced for a good B&B”

I will start by saying I enjoyed my stay at the Thorncroft, and that it is a decent B&B.
The owner is very helpful, and when you check in you get a very thorough introduction to the inn and the island. On top of that you will get good tips on restaurants, sightseeing, etc. A fireplace that is made ready to light every day when you come back is definitely nice too. Then there is a good breakfast with more than enough fruits and creative cooking to satisfy most. But, when my wife said she had an egg allergy, the staff member had to ask (!) if it was possible to have a breakfast without eggs, though. Not exactly the reaction you expect... Specially not at 350$ a night. And that is where the problem for me wit this inn lies. In short, it is overpriced. I agree with some of the reviewers here that at $350 or more per night you are entitled to expect more than what this inn offers.
Our room was small, and breathed the atmosphere of the early nineties - and that is not a good thing. Vinyl shutters, 14 inch tv for which you have to turn at a 90 degree angle in your bed, alarmclock from 1970 or so, and a very small room and bathroom. The pictures on the website are indeed a bit misleading, in that they portray the rooms as much bigger than they are.
If the price was lower it would be a good B&B, now: I cannot recommend it.

“Exquisite and relaxing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 January 2010

We spent a week at the Thorncroft. We stayed in the freestanding cottage which was a great choice. The room was spacious, comfortable, attractively appointed--and most important, absolutely spotless. There was a large amount of information on the island in the room which made decisions about dining and sightseeing very easy.

We looked forward to breakfast each morning--a full, freshly cooked breakfast with innovative recipes by Karl, the owner. Superb food.

The staff was pleasant, flexible, and accommodating. We had a wonderful time.

Complaints? Can't think of any.
We are going back this summer and bringing some relatives.

“When an inn is a second home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2009

We have been staying at the Thorncroft Inn for over fifteen years. Our first stay was in October of '92 when we needed to catch our breath and refocus our lives after suffering a loss in our family. We arrived at the Vineyard and the delightful Thorncroft Inn, welcomed by Karl and Lynn. Through our initial conversation, Karl asked the correct questions and was thus able to ascertain what he needed to know to assure our stay was a success - be it dinner reservations, what sites to visit or simply what type of beach we would prefer. As per our initial visit, the Inn is consistently immaculate which is of great importance since allergies are an issue in our family. The attention to detail to make each visit special is a hallmark of the Thorncroft Inn. Each room is unique and designed for comfort and relaxation. There is nothing like coming back to your room after a day at the beach, a lobster dinner and being able to finish the evening in front of a well maintained, working fireplace that requires only a match to start. All of the rooms we have stayed in have had balconies with peaceful views and privacy. The beds have always been comforable and either queen or king size.
Karl's breakfast are wonderful from delicious fresh baked muffins to outstanding french toast. The menu changes daily and Karl and Lynn will always accomodate dietary needs or requests. During our stays, we always make sure to have at least one breakfast in bed.
Also, the Inn is approximately one mile from the ferry. Thus, if you don't have a car, you can walk or take a short taxi ride to the Inn. Vineyard Haven is also an easy walk from the Inn with charming shops. Karl always reminds us when we make our dinner reservations which towns on the Vineyard are "dry" and thus to remember to bring a bottle of wine.
However, this Inn is more than just about the rooms and amenities. Karl and Lynn truly know and care about their guests. On a personal note, our stays at theThorncroft feel like we are returning to a very special place; an Inn that feels like home. Thus, the awards the Inn has received throughout the years are truly well deserved.

“Consistently a FABULOUS experience!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 November 2009

My husband and I have been enjoying B&B's throughout our many years of travel. When you travel as much as we do, you can't help but make comparisons. There are very few B&B's that I consider exceptional......B&B owners that take such pride they go above and beyond. The Thorncroft Inn is one of those places. I remember , years ago, when we arrived at the property of the Thorncroft for the first time, being more than impressed. The grounds alone were beautifully landscaped and so welcoming. Upon entering the front door and meeting Karl and Lynn, we knew it was going to be a memorable experience. From the warmth and hospitality, to the all around wonderful service, to the tastefully decorated and exceptionally clean rooms, we couldn't help but feel extremely pampered. Chef Karl does a phenominal job with a delicious, full breakfast each morning.....beginning with his 'made from scratch' muffins ......the pistachio are to die for! Being the only owners of the Thorncroft and having lived on the island forever, Karl and Lynn are more than well versed about Martha's Vineyard. They can tell you about every nook and cranny, the best restaurants, etc. They have put together a wonderful guide of 'special spots' .....a most helpful resource. Needless to say, my husband and I keep returning and can't imagine staying anywhere but the Thorncroft when visiting Martha's Vineyard. Our most recent visit may have been our 6th or 7th, who knows? We just know we can always count on the warmth of Lynn and Karl and the consistency of a FABULOUS experience. I highly recommend this inn to anyone seeking this type of experience.
