My wife and I checked into the Hanover House Inn, looking forward to a quiet and relaxing visit to Martha’s Vineyard. The advertisement for the inn states that it is “Perfect for that quiet romantic stay you wanted.” The room that we reserved was called “Room 6—A Quiet Escape.”
It was anything but quiet. There was a wedding party booked into the inn, and they proceeded to party from approximately 4:00 pm until 10:15 pm on a small deck right outside our door, making it difficult for us to relax and enjoy our stay. They were not raucous or out of line in any way. However, it was just loud enough to be disturbing.
I called the front desk to complain but there was no one available so I left a voice mail message. My wife subsequently went to the front desk but no one was on duty and there was a sign to call the owner if there was a problem. She did so and was told that he would call over to the inn to take care of it. He did not offer any apologies or express any concerns about the party.
The party was still going on at 10:15 pm, when the inn asks guests to be quiet, so I called the owner, Steve Perlman and left him a voice mail message, complaining about the party and asking him to call me back.
I never received a call back so I called him the next morning. He immediately became extremely defensive and stated several times that there are weddings all over the island every weekend, implying that it was ok to be situated in a room next to a party for 6 hours. He stated as long as the party was not raucous, he was not going to interfere. I stated that my complaint was not with the wedding group and the fact that they were holding a party. It was that we should have been informed when we checked in and been offered alternate accommodations, if available (he also owns the Clark House, right next door) or been offered some type of a refund. He refused to acknowledge that courtesy and continued to insist that the wedding group had a right to party and that we should have been ok with it.
I have stayed in hundreds of hotels, inns, and bed and breakfasts over 40 years and have never been treated so rudely and discourteously by an owner or staff. Instead of sincerely apologizing and bending over backwards to rectify the situation, he in effect said, “Tough luck, that’s the way it goes.” I asked if we could check out and get a refund for the second night, as we no longer wanted to stay in an establishment where guests were treated in this manner. He was inflexible and would not budge. We ended up moving to another inn and eating the cost of the room.
Finally, I said that I was planning to write a review of the inn online and relate my experience. He stated that if I did that he would write a rebuttal and include my name. I said that it was a violation of my privacy to include my name, and he responded by stating that once I submit a review online, I give up my rights to privacy and he is entitled to share my name with the rest of the world. This exemplifies the type of treatment I received from the owner. It was appalling and very disturbing.
By the way, the room and the inn itself were ok, nothing to write home about. It was a little tired looking and rustic, certainly not worth the price. If you want a quiet and relaxing stay on Martha’s Vineyard, I suggest you look elsewhere.
