“Do not make a reservation here or you will find yourself without one”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 August 2010

I have stayed at the Heritage in October for the last 7 years for 3 weeks (in cabin 7 which is a 2 room cabin) 2 years ago a new owner bought it. Since then I noticed it is not being kept up like it was. Last year the heater was not working and he supplied only 1 small space heater. Thank goodness it was not to cold. The hot water ran out and that issue was not addressed until the next day. However the weekly rates are the lowest around the area and I still consider it an ok deal.

I called up today 8/31 to confirm my October reservation for 21 days and was told by the manager that all reservations are being cancelled per the owner because he has people living in all the cabins as renters. If I did not phone today I wonder if or when I would have been called. I phoned the Chamber of Commerce and reported them. They should not be advertising as a motel if this is what they are going to do. I have traveled extensively and have never been treated like this. Now with October being a busy month in New England I am having to scramble to find a place. I was told all the cabins are filled up and as long as people are paying their rent they cannot tell them to leave because they have people coming in with reservations. I made my reservation 1 year ago!!!!. I was also told that they would be cancelling reservations for the people coming into town next week for the Brimfield flea mkt that stay there. Gee, you think they could have given more notice since they obviously knew about this. I'm just glad I phoned them because I would have been given the same courtesy of 1 week notice I'm sure.

“Honest Reviews?”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

We would have immediately checked out after seeing the room and bathroom - if it was not so late, the baby wasn't crying and everyone wasn't so exhausted. We cut short a vacation in Maine and headed back to Virginia due to a family illness. We stopped in Sturbridge because it was getting late and we needed to get our 6 year old, 8 year old and 3 month old fed and into bed. We arrived at the office to check-in and rang the buzzer for service. The front door knob coming off should have been a clue to look elsewhere. The owner arrived wearing only a pair of shorts. He was pleasant and greeted my sons. He said that he still had a room available. We told him that we found the motel on TripAdvisor and that they had good reviews. He said that he was surprised to hear that and even gave us an additional discount.
After checking in- we unloaded our luggage in the room. The filthy trash cans outside of the room should have been another clue that things were not up to par. Inside the room the smell of mold was very strong. Damaged ceiling tiles told the tale of a leaking roof. In the bathroom I found a used dirty towel hanging on back of the bathroom door. The shower was covered with mold. The filthy toilet, dirty walls, dirty floor, dirty sink, charred outlet, damaged blinds, missing slats for the blinds, opened window, missing floor tiles told another tale of no maintenance and lack of proper housekeeping.
At this point I was still determined to get the kids fed and called a local restaurant to order food. I planned to pick up the food and bring it back, but my wife did not feel safe after seeing another gentleman sitting out in front of the room next door. The gentleman was talking on the phone. His crude language and being half dressed did leave a good impression.
The food arrived after 9pm and we got the kids fed and into bed. We had to skip the showers becuase of the filthy conditions in the bathroom. I used disinfectant wipes that we carried with us to wipe down the toilet and sink areas (My wife originally thought I was silly to bring the disinfectant wipes- but I told her we may need them at some point) and used one of the bedspreads to cover the window in the bathroom for privacy.
The kids fell asleep quickly because they were exhausted and although I took a couple of Benadryl tablets, I did not sleep well on the old worn out mattress. We got up early and vowed to not make the same mistake again.
We made sure to stop early enough and check out the room at the next motel before checking-in. The Mill Stream Inn at Bird-in-Hand, Pennsylvania was the following night was an example of how a motel should be maintained and operated.
The Sturbridge, Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce should have a division to check out hotels and motels to make sure the hospitality industry does not give the town a bad name. Our one night stay in Sturbridge will always be remembered for the filthiest motel we ever stayed in.
I have tried to post some of the photos taken at the Heritage Motel, but could not get them to load while writing this review. I have tried to load the photos from a different page on TripAdvisor. Hopefully, they will post the photos. The Heritage Motel is in dire need of renovations. I have to ask if the good reviews were honest reviews. If the photos are loaded- you can see for yourself the truth of the matter.

(Motel is set back from the road!!)H20 is hot! The owners are wonderful people who are very accommodating, and knowledgeable about the area..

“Fine for the money”

Stayed here after reading reviews on Trip Advisor. With AAA we paid $50 for a double bed. The room was small and the bed was creaky and not up to date but - the place was clean and freshly painted. It did have a strong perfume smell to the room but it was not hiding old smoke. We stayed one night - less than 12 hrs there all together so - it was fine. I would try to get a bigger bed next time but $50 for a clean and safe place to sleep - can't beat that!

  • Liked — Great for an overnight on the way to somewhere else.
  • Disliked — lumpy bed

“Nice place, but stay away from Room 6...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 December 2007

Decided to give the Heritage a try due to the positive reviews here when stopping through town on a trip to New England.

We (me and my wife, no kids...yet!) stayed for two nights in Room 6. We wish that the queen suite room was open, but there was only one and it was already booked. We found the property to be ideally located along busy US 20 - definitely far enough away from traffic, but close enough to some great restaurants. (We ate at Cedar Street and Admiral TJ O'Briens...Cedar Street wasn't great, but the down home food at O'Briens was top notch, and the live music was neat.)

We have stayed in many hotel rooms, and this was the smallest room either of us has stayed in. Make no mistake - their single rooms would not fit more than 2 people. You wouldn't even be able to fit a sleeping bag.

The rooms are well appointed, even if they are small - we had a microwave, refrigerator, TV with tons of channels, and everything was very clean.

Our bed was the main downer of the stay. It creaked with every small movement and the mattress felt like it was 30 years old with lots of lumps. Neither of us were expecting a Hilton-style mattress, but it was definitely an upgrade that Room 6 needed.

Overall, not a bad place if you're not expecting top-notch luxury. If a nice clean motel is what you're looking for, the Sturbridge is a great place. Just stay away from Room 6 if you want a good night's sleep!
