“Good place to get away”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

We stayed for New Years weekend so we could get away from everything. The people at the inn were very pleasant. The cleaning staff came every morning and did a wonderful job.
There are several improvements that could be made. The furniture could be replaced. It is beginning to show wear.
We ate at the restaurant on the first night. I had a delicious seafood dish. The service was fast and friendly. While we were eating the chef came out and introduced himself to the diners one table at a time. One couple had just arrived and he recited the "chefs specials" to them None of the other guests had heard those special. Personally I would have ordered one of those.
None of those experiences changes the fact that we left there rested and relaxed.

Room Tip: The 2 room suites with the kitchenette are great if you don't want to leave the room

“Great Potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 October 2011

Very charming from the outside, but the rooms are very outdated, bed was old and small, and the room had a musty odor. The strangest was the soap and shampoo dispenser on the wall in the tub. I've only seen that at the gym. The staff was very helpful and friendly. We didn't try the restaurant, but a continental breakfast was provided that was nice enough. The rooms could stand a serious makeover and it would be a lovely New England inn. The price was very reasonable for the room.

“Did Not Stay at Inn - Only to Restaurant”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 July 2011

On a recent visit to the Chocksett Inn and Restaurant in Sterling, Mass, we came away very disappointed. After reading some of the other reviews, it would appear that we were not alone.

If the owners of this restaurant want to discourage repeat business, they have succeeded. Needless to say, the service was atrocious and the dinner (when it finally arrived) was mediocre.

Should you have to ask for bread? (none was offered after we were seated), ask for water? (none was offered after we were seated), AND ask "where's the dinner?" (finally arrived after 45 minutes, which by the way, tasted as though it had merely been zapped in the microwave rather than "cooked". At any rate, we are normally 20 to 25% tippers (20 for good and 25 for outstanding - but it must be outstanding). On this occasion, we left 10%. That may tell you just how bad this place was. Totally dysfunctional.

“Wedding was awesome.... Everything else, not so much”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 July 2011

We got married here in October 2010. The actual wedding went off without a hitch, and made everything else worth it... I guess in the end that's all that matters. The facility and grounds are very nice. Perfect if you like classic New England and the fall. The really nice benefit for those interested is that its a rather new facility (the banquet hall) and is easily handicap accessible. It is very clean, nicely decorated, and classic.

The staff is another story. Our wedding planner quit mid way through the process. The events coordinator.... "Well call her "Maris" from Cheers. If you know her or see her, you'll know exactly what were talking about. She is good and bad. At the end of the day, we got everything we wanted how we wanted it, but it was a BATTLE the entire way. It really made the process unenjoyable.

The food: oh boy... really tough subject here. We went to eat here several times while we were planning the wedding, and it was a 6 out of 10. Very hit or miss with the food. The apps were phenomenal. The duck wings... wow I want them right now just writing this. The entres though are another matter. We went there for St. Patty's day for corn beef and cabbage and it was like it was left over from last year. Needless to say we were a bit worried about the quality of the food for our wedding. They knocked it out of the park. 8 months later, and people still talk to us about the food at our wedding... it was that good.

The service staff is typical old school New England. Your not going to get that "Southern Hospitality Charm" here. They (front desk and hotel staff) are all short and to the point. They act like you are interrupting them everytime you ask a question. As I said, this is why New England has the reputation for being so rude... But if you are a true bred New Englander, its just par for the course.

The rooms are a bit on the disgraceful side. They are very old and outdated, maybe even a bit grungy. Yet they are quite spacious and full of potential. If they ever upgraded the old Inn and rooms like the downstairs restaurant, pub, and function hall is upgraded, this place would be a serious destination.

Again, there were A LOT of bumps along the way, but it was all worth it as the wedding was perfect. "Maris" was on her best behavior and the whole thing went off without a hitch (except for the getting hitched part). Overall, if I could do it all over again, I would have our wedding here in a heartbeat again. The road was painful at times, but it was a great day to remember at the end.

“Has the record for the smallest beds in the USA”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 June 2011

Nice Inn for the money. However the queen size bed was so small that when the two of us were on the bed, my left hand was over the side and her right hand was also over the side.

We are not large people. NO WAY CAN TWO PEOPLE SLEEP IN THIS BED. We asked for a larger bed-but we were told they are all the same size. This would be OK for a half night. We had to ask for a cot for one of us. No problem. Its will cost $10 per night extra.

The only plus is that the Inn was close to our family.

Room Tip: Bring your own bed.
