“A Lovely Romantic Inn in Beautiful North Central Massachusetts!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 December 2011

We recently returned to the Clamber Hill Inn for their holiday open house which was simply fantastic. We have dined several times from 2009-2011 at the Clamber Hill Inn and Restaurant. The food is always expertly prepared and seasoned with a gourmet flair. Salads are fresh, delicious, and creative, while entrees are exquisite, with a lovely presentation to match. We have also had the pleasure of staying for an evening at the inn. We found the nautical room to be decorated graciously, with a beautiful working fireplace. The warmth, kindness, and personality of the owners, Mark (the chef, as well) and Deni Ellis, were a perfect match for the Colonial elegance of the inn. We recommend both the restaurant and the inn wholeheartedly, and strongly encourage you to try Clamber Hill for a night or a weekend!

“Completely underwhelmed. Overpriced rooms and mediocre experience at best.”

We based our visit here on reviews read in TripAdvisor..and feel misled. We know the area fairly well...Petersham is a gem of trails to hike, bike and water (ponds and streams) to swim in....there is great food nearby in Barre and neighboring towns. HOWEVER, Clammer Hill Inn, is unfortunatley lacking what we were led to believe it had. Rooms were fine, linens and towels are fine..pillows are poor.....the rooms are not dirty, not perfectly clean. Under our bed had someone elses underwear-Yuk. However, the overal inn felt very heavy, and dark and actually sad....it was clearly once quite a weekend/summer home for a wealthy family..but now the house feels very heavy and dark and dour. The innkeepers Mark and Deni, I am sure when they started this venture had wonderful ideas and energy but it's hard work and we felt they were pretty burnt out. The energy in the house is very low and the service felt non existent. And don't deviate from the time when you tell them you want breakfast..if you show up early you get the evil eye...very weird. The house needs to be opened up and AIRED out...feels mungy inside. Bottom line is for the prices charged....we expected A LOT more....a greeting, some fresh flowers, air circulating through the house, maybe an afternoon offering of beverarage iced tea or lemonade....I really think the Ellis's just don't care to offer those gracious things anymore. It's a pity because one can really see the potential here..the area is sublime....go and explore Petersham, worth the trip. The bad news is there really aren't many other choices in the vicinity to stay..perhaps with more competition...Clammer Hill would step up their offereings.

At Clamber Hill we like our coffee fresh, so we ask what time to expect you for yours. When guests show up 90 minutes early we may be a little surprised, especially when they tell us they want to sleep late. In this case, fresh coffee was ready in less than five minutes along with early orange Juice.

We do offer afternoon beverages to our guests when they are here in the afternoon hours. In this case, the guests were visiting friends in the area and they didn't spend much time at the inn--it's difficult to offer anything special, but we do hope you appreciated the fact that we supplied fresh towels after your evening showers, and dried and folded the wet beach towels that were left in the room. That's an extra service, that burnt -out innkeepers normally don't provide.

We have been Innkeepers for fourteen years and take pride in providing guest services.

“Lovely, romantic, delectable”

This stay was a dream come true. Everything from the welcome to the room to the meals was absolutely divine. We stayed in the the Oriental Room with a big brass bed and a deep luxurious tub. Our dinner was served by candlelight with flowers. The room was enclosed in glass so we could see flowers and trees and birds. The food was superb, the service beyond excellent, the dessert was scrumptious. We loved the selection of classical music available to play in the room. We listened to Vivaldi and Mozart but there were lots of jazz selections as well. I enjoyed browsing the books and decorations in the library. We especially loved meeting the horses and dogs. Jack guided us on a small hike of the wooded path behind the Inn. He is a beautiful white dog with a shining personality. The front yard is a regular wildlife preserve with gold finches, red-winged blackbirds, butterflies and chipmunks galore. I loved every minute or our stay and am grateful to our gracious hosts. Oh, and the pear almond pancakes were as good as food will ever be. Yum.

“Have no hesitation about making a reservation”

My girlfriend and I took advantage of the Winter Romance Package and it was well worth it. Deni and Marc are wonderful host. Our room was clean and well decorated and the bathroom was modernized with a strong shower that supplied lots of hot water.

The highlight of our stay was the food. The breakfasts and dinner were amazing--we are still talking about the homemade muffins, pancakes, and other goodies.

Despite a prior comment regarding pets and allergic reactions, my girlfriend is very allergic to cats and some dogs, but she didn’t have any issues with our room or the common areas. To that point, on a number of occasions we found ourselves commenting on how clean not just our room was, but the entire inn as well.

If the opportunity arises, we would definitely come back to the inn and certainly recommend it to friends and family.

“Magical place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2011

An elegant and grand country inn in the middle of a New England forest. Long winding driveway up to inn adds to the mystique. Wonderful room with all amenities, including equipment for making morning tea/coffee and sherry for the evening by the fireplace, which worked beautifully, was set, and had nice dry wood. Beautiful glass-enclosed dining porch with snow-falling outside adds to the atmosphere at breakfast.

Thank you for your kind description. We have always felt that Clamber Hill is a magical place in the winter time and are glad that you feel that way too. We hope to see you again sometime, perhaps for one of our Romantic Winter Getaways when you and your husband can enjoy more than just a quick stay with us.
