“Extremely disappointed in this hotel!”

My family and I have been traveling to MV for the last 20 yrs. We have stayed in all types of places (rented homes, hotels and b&b's). This time, as a gift from a friend and resident of the island, we were invited to stay at the Wesley. Words cannot describe the bare minimum attention paid to the decor of these rooms. At the rate that they charge the mgmt could at least have a phone in the room, some decent bed linens and a comfortable mattress. I am currently writing my review from my 4G cell phone in this lousy room because I spent all night trying to connect to this "shady" wifi. I was almost in tears because I couldn't connect to facetime by wifi on my ipad so my 2 boys could talk and see their grandparents. I woke up with bloodshot eyes because of lack of sleep since the cheap old shade in our room refused to stay down until I figured out a way to pin it down by folding it under the window. If this stay was not a "gift" I would have packed up the first night!

P.S. One good aspect, great location.

One more night here...ugh!

Dear Mr. Wilson,

we are sorry that you were disappointed with your stay at the Wesley. However, I would like to make a couple of notes reference your points:
1) the rooms have standard hotel setup, we do not offer phones in the rooms because we are a seasonal hotel, and are only open May through October. However, there are phones on every floor, allowing our guests to connect to Front Desk that is manned 24 hours.
2) Let me also point out that Wesley Hotel rates are within the average rate level on the island of Martha's Vineyard. Our mattresses and bed linens come from the American Hotel registry catalog, and our housekeeping staff works very hard to keep the rooms clean. Yes, we are not offering luxury accommodations with luxury furnishings, but at the same time we offer clean, affordable rooms.
3) The WI-FI Internet access at the Wesley is provided complimentary, as a courtesy for our guests. Noone else on the same floor has complained that the Internet was not working. Should you have chosen to speak to the Front Desk staff about this problem, we would have tried to accommodate your request the best we could.
4) The "cheap old shade" you are referring to was immediately replaced, and we apologize for the inconvenience it caused you.

“So much potential, but....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

This hotel has the most wonderful front porch for rocking and a beautiful view of the bay. But, that's it. The rooms are old (but clean), no telephone, cheap bedding including polyester bedspread and worn out wool blankets. Only 2 pillows for a queen-size bed! There is so much potential for this hotel. The location is awesome and the front porch filled with comfy rocking chairs makes you forget about the no frills accommodations. If you're looking for a harbor view and in the heart of Oaks Bluff, then this hotel is perfect! Just don't plan on spending time in the room or you'll be disappointed.

Room Tip: Stay in the main hotel...avoid room #106...backs up to the parking lot and the lights from the back...

Dear wendyalmstead,

We thank you for your constructive review. Here are couple of points that I would like to address in response:
1) no phones in the rooms - the Wesley Hotel indeed does not have telephones in rooms, due to the fact that we are only open for the public from May-thru October, and with everybody now using their cell phone, the costs of installing a complete telephone system will be prohibitive. However, every hallway on each floor has an emergency phone that allows within seconds to be connected to the Front Desk that is staffed 24 hours/7 days a week.
2) 2 pillows for a Queen size bed - the beds are equipped with two standard pillows, however, if you require extra pillows, just notify the staff at the Front Desk, and they will be happy to provide you with the extra ones you require.
3) cheap bedding - the sheets that are used at the Wesley Hotel come form the American Hotel Registry catalog, and meeting all the standards required for the hotel bedding. We are working hard for the 2012 season to bring some upgrades and have started 2012 season with completely new toiletries and towels in all rooms. Our Housekeeping staff is working to keep all the rooms clean and comfortable for our guests.
4) room 106 is a handicapped accessible room - so by definition it is located on the ground floor of the hotel, and is equipped with shades that prevent street lights from coming in the room.

“Great Manager & Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2011

We reserved rooms at the Wesley for our dauther's wedding. Manager, Alain Michel, did a great job accommodating our wedding guests as well as our requests. His good ideas and suggestions really helped us to make it a wonderful experience.
Especially want to thank him for saving us at the “11th hour” when MV taxi service never showed to take our guests to the wedding site. Alain immediately called other Taxi Services to transport everyone.
The staff also was especially accommodating, friendly, and enthusiastic about our stay.

I hope owner, Peter Martel, appreciates his wonderful staff and the valued employee he has in Mr. Michel.

I had stayed at the Wesley Hotel years ago with girlfriends. I came back recently and was completely disappointed in the rooms decor, service, shower, tolieties, towles, and front desk help. Never again! The bedspreads have not been updated since the Brady Bunch was on TV!

Dear 37814,

We are sorry you were not happy with the Front Desk staff, however, In all the fairness, it is necessary to say that Wesley Hotel prides itself on our customer service, we pay careful attention to training and empowering our staff to do their best to accommodate guest requests.

For the 2012 season we also have upgraded all the towels and toiletries in the hotel. We have partially renovated the exterior of the Main Wesley building, and renovated the bathrooms in all the hotel Suites. We hope that you will have a better experience in the future, and will do our best to accommodate your needs.

“Wonderful old hotel”

My daughter and I stay here each fall for a weekend. The prices are much less expensive then and the Island is much quieter. The hotel is perfectly adequate for a weekend stay. Not lots of bells and whistles, but clean and close to the center of Oak Bluffs and the ferry/bus/etc. Pay showers are located on the first level for visitors that have been to the beach and have already checked out. The hotel will also store your luggage for you after check out - should you care to venture out around the Island before leaving. Overall, a very good experience.

Room Tip: There are two sections of the hotel. The newer section has elevators, should you require these. I...
