“Fall Getaway”

We took a weekend trip to Marblehead in the fall and were looking for someplace unique and inexpensive. The Nautilus served our needs perfectly. A weathered little place that had a comfortable bed and a friendly owner, we found we were the only ones there and enjoyed it immensely. A storm was coming in and the wind howling between the buildings reminded us of where we were. We were warm and cozy inside and fell asleep to the sounds of a Nor'easter announcing its arrival. Directly across the street is the Driftwood, a little red shack that serves up no nonsense food, good portions, good coffee and lots of locals. Take your cup of coffee and sit outside to watch the boats bouncing on the waves or the spray shooting off the rocks just beyond. Marblehead is the perfect place to take off on a dreamy drive to Rockport or Gloucester. But take a short stroll through the town of Marblehead first. The shops are great. We picked up 2 Northface jackets because it was a bit chilly. Abbot Hall has the famous Spirit of '76 painting on display. Then hop in your car and take the scenic route north. Speed limits are around 25 mph so you have no choice but to slow down and admire the amazing colors and old houses. Stop in Gloucester (home of the Perfect Storm) & take a picture with the Gloucester Fisherman, go through City Hall to see the names and dates of the many fisherman lost at sea or visit the Cape Ann Historical Society. It has a fantastic little museum and is just down the block from City Hall. Continue up the coast to Rockport , visit the shops, have a look at Motif #1 (most painted picture) and definitely have a bowl of clam chowder while you're there.
