My husband and I stayed at Canyon Ranch for 3 nights over the holidays. I really struggled with what rating to give the place - because I do not want anyone to be deceived. Some will love this place and others will wonder what the heck the fuss is all about. I settled on 3 stars by trying to balance the experience and the cost. So here goes:
>The place is EXTREMELY expensive. For the cost, the rooms were adequate and nice, but hardly 5 star luxurious.
>The place is about the Canyon Ranch lifestyle. They have fabulous cardio, yoga and other classes; as well as classes about wellness and being your best you. It is about the lifestyle, cannot say that enough.
>While the resort was full while we were there, the classes never felt crowded nor did the ample gym area. There were wonderful tennis, squash and basketball courts. (And, that no doubt, is what you are paying for).
>The spa area itself was disappointing. It did not feel luxurious nor peaceful and the space/quiet area to wait for your treatments is in the same place as the hot tubs - you are overwhelmed by the smell of chlorine! Not somewhere to hang out and luxuriate. The showers in the women's spa were standard hotel issue - nothing fabulous like body jets or rain heads, etc.
>The food. Totally hit or miss. While I love being able to be away and eat carefully and healthfully, some of the dishes were just plain tasteless. Others were particularly good. Go figure.
>The average age of the crowd is well into their 50s plus. That being said, there were several couples in their 40s. Lots of parents with adult children home for the holidays.
>Overall, I think, if you are going to spend this much money on a spa, get on a plane and go to a spa somewhere else like in AZ or CO.

Your thoughtful remarks regarding your recent stay at Canyon Ranch in Lenox were appreciated. It is true that Canyon Ranch is not for everyone. Our mission is to inspire people to make a commitment to healthy living, turning hopes and intentions into the highest enjoyment of life. We certainly want people to enjoy themselves while they are here but it is the post-visit changes that are the most important. I was glad you enjoyed the fitness offerings and your candor regarding the spa, rooms, and food was appreciated. Your input allows us to evaluate where we fit in the luxury resort marketplace and look for ways to stand out and increase our level of service. We do hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again soon.
Healthy Regards,
Reggie Cooper
