“Wish our stay was longer”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

We were not aware of the walls and floor construction, as the previous review submits, because we pretty much had the place to ourselves due to the arrival of the October monsoons. That aside, the location, views, and especially our host Ed Comer, were all first rate. Ed is very knowledgeable about the history and culture of Gloucester, and was a great pleasure to talk to. He also made a couple of calls for us and among them, recommended an excellent restaurant, the Topside. The room was spacious and clean, even had a fireplace. Postcard location and great host.

Room Tip: We looked at all the rooms and decided right away on the one on the first floor, which we were very...

“Not for light sleepers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 October 2011

I'll concur the review previous to this in several aspects. The fact that this inn is so close to the beach is an amazing feature. You are within walking distance to Good Harbor Beach. Sunrises and sunsets were very nice both on the beach and in the inn as well.
I feel bad leaving an "average" review because the hosts were so nice and helpful and lovely to talk to. But goodness, those walls AND ceilings are paper thin. When I say you can hear everything, you can hear everything, from your right or left and up and down. One night we had someone above us walking for several minutes at 1:30 in the morning in their room. You could hear entire conversations from the next room over (makes you wonder what others heard from your room!). This is not the place for light sleepers, which I am. Makes you wonder what the noise level is like in the summer, when it's high season.
I also misread (maybe?) the room description which I thought had a private bath- which it did, but not on suite. It was just across the hall, but I sure didn't want anyone to catch me in my towel! That should perhaps be clarified in the website descriptions. Breakfast was continental, but I wish there had been more homemade goodies.

Room Tip: Pick a room on the top floor so you don't get the noise from the other floors.

We’ve seen two recent guests comment on TripAdvisor that the Blue Shutters “isn’t for light sleepers”, and we thought we should respond.

We like to think the Blue Shutters has something for everyone – and even light sleepers will enjoy a stay here (we’re pretty sure many already have). But it is true this is an older building, meaning we don’t have the concrete floors and walls you’ll find in a motel. We think the fact that guests are staying in an older building that was once a private home is why so many enjoy the Blue Shutters and find it so interesting.

And when they’re enjoying themselves, we rely on guests to be respectful of others -- because we’re an older home, with most of the building dating back over a century. We’ve found that most guests do, and when others call issues to our attention, we’ve been able to address them. We did just that with one of the guests who wrote about this – and we would have done the same for the other if it was brought up. We even have ear-plugs available for those guests who would like them.

There was a question about the summer noise, and in fact it’s usually quiet here during that season – with more people staying outdoors for longer periods…and tiring themselves on the beach or around town before returning the Blue Shutters. In the warmer months, the sounds of the beach from open windows -- and even the hum of the air conditioners – can compensate for whatever noise may be coming from the room next door or above you. In the off-season, it tends to be quiet because there are fewer folks here, and they tend to be here for some relaxation.

As for the other issues that were brought up – those who have been coming here for awhile know that we’re making great progress with new furniture, bedding and décor. But there’s not much we can do about the walls and floors – and nothing we need to do about the views!

Finally, we’re glad to hear that these TripAdvisor reviewers gave high marks to the innkeepers. We try our best to make everyone comfortable, and we’re thankful that this was recognized. We appreciate those kind comments.

Hopefully, when you consider all this -- and the other TripAdvisor reviews about all that the Blue Shutters has to offer – you’ll come for a visit…and like so many others, come back again and again.

“High price low quality”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 October 2011

The view is incredible, no question and the beach lovely. But walls are like paper and the decor is seriously out of date. Okay for a circa 1975 cabin but not at these prices. Bed linens are very cheap and in some cases torn. Basically poor quality everything though the hosts are very nice and helpful. We stayed in the beachside room which is an efficiency. The main bedroom has a king but no view and a bit airless. The living room has 2 very old chairs and a trundle bed which was uncomfortable. The trundle part is like a very old cot.

Room Tip: Go for view, that way if other visitors keep you awake then you can open your window and hear the oc...

“Beautiful View Great People”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2011

As newcomers to the Blue Shutters we enjoyed a relaxing weekend on a beautiful beach, walked along a gorgeous shoreline, and were in good company of those at the Inn.
Our room was spacious, clean and had a great view of the beach. Light breakfast nosh, with coffee, fruit , yogurt and some baked goods offered. It was a great get away. Would go back and bring our friends.

Room Tip: Front side have the views of the beach. Most rooms have a private bath. Small refrigerators availa...
