“Great Location for Ferry to Marther's Vinyard”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 November 2010

Good value hotel, nothing spectacular but nice rooms, we had one of the cheapest on offer and it was a good size, nice aspect, couldn’t find any fault with it. However the thing that made this hotel great for us was the proximity to the ferry to Marther’s Vineyard. The ferry charge $15 to park but The Red Horse Inn is only a few minute walk from the ferry, and parking was free. (We visited out of season, in late Sept, so not 100% sure if hotel charges in peak times)

“Decent hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2010

The room appeared to be quite clean however, they keep pillows in shams over the pillows with the regular pillowcases which seems rather unhygienic. Also, there is an ice bucket included in the room, but there was no bag included and you had to go to the front desk and hope someone was there to give you some ice. The cups in the room were also just open with nothing covering them and no sign that they were changed when the guests of the room changed. The bathroom was cute and clean, and they stock bath and body works soap and shampoo. The bathroom is pretty small which makes me wary of how far the toilet water sprays when you flush. Also you have to hold the handle down for about a minute before the toilet flushes all the way.

There is a mini fridge in the room. If you want coffee or tea you have to go to the breakfast room which closes pretty early in the evening. They also leave the lights off in their all day so it seems very unwelcoming. The machine they expect people to get the hot water from is basically impossible to use, and they should leave a book of instructions next to it. The breakfast was different types of cereal, bagels, croissants, yogurt (if you're lucky and get there early), apples and bananas, and juice boxes.

We did not have a car with us, nor rent one for a trip to Falmouth. According to all the books and online information, there appeared to be a decent amount of public transportation and things to do nearby that we could walk around. The "town" was about 1.5 miles away in one direction, and the beach 1.5 miles away in the other direction. Instead of a pool at the Red Horse, there is just a giant gravel pit with patio furniture so it was quite a hike to get to and from a source of water. The "public transportation" of Falmouth is a joke. We were told that there was a trolley as well as a bus system before we arrived in Massachusetts. While the people in Falmouth had seen the trolley and buses driving around the city, no one knew where they picked people up, where they went, or how much they cost. I would hope that the people working at the front desk would brush up on this information before more guests arrive at their hotel.

“Has gone downhill”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

We stayed here about 5 years ago and thought it was excellent value. I believe the original owners sold the business several years ago. The new owners need to do some catching up on deferred maintenance. The room we stayed in was very comfotable but there were minor problems such as a swollen front door which made it difficult to exit the room. The comment from a previous poster about a lack of trees is on the money. I don't know what it would cost to plant some mature shade trees but they are badly needed.
Thought the continental breakfast was fine. THey had orange juice, coffee, yogurt, cereal, muffins, bagels and pastries....works for me. It was set up in a seperate room with the option of dining inside or out on the patio. Falmouth, in the summertime, is absolutely nuts so being just on the outskirts of the CBD is a blessing. Hope the new owners will work hard to get it back into top notchform and regain their AAA rating.

“AWESOME!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2010

As we've been lodged in many places around the Cape, we must admit we were amazed at the handsome and well decorated rooms we found in this hidden Inn. Placed in a very peaceful, though surrounded by enough stores and markets, the Red Horse Inn was a very pleasant surprise. With its clean, bright rooms, nicely furnished, and quiet surroundings, really it was an oasis in the middle of the Cape... and at a very affordable price!!

“Red Horse Inn: quite overrated”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 August 2010

This is really a simple but colorfully appointed two-level motel on a Falmouth road that intersects nearby Main Street. This is not the fault of the motel owners, but it also means it's around the corner from a group of big-box store strip malls: useful if one needs to shop, but a little sad in a town that pushes its charm and history. The place is well-kept, with clean, large, bright rooms. I would advise the owners not to fly such large "Open" and "Welcome" signs, which add an obvious measure of tackiness.

What was once apparently a pool in the courtyard is now an offputting expanse of white gravel. With no trees and full sun exposure, it is not used and seems to blend into the over-large gravel parking lot. The breakfast was mediocre at best; for $200 a night, one would expect something of far higher quality. The desk staff were pleasant, but didn't seem particularly knowledgeable about the area (including reasonably good dining choices); they did push, a little too much, the appeal of the ferry terminal two blocks away. A prominent sign in the room cautioned guests about running air conditioning with the windows open, yet this is exactly what the housekeeping staff did when we left the room; we returned to find it running full blast with all the windows open.

We appreciated the WiFi connection and the ability to easily run or bike away from main roads toward or along the shore road; Woods Hole is an easy bike ride away. On the plus side too were comfortable beds and nice soaps. In general, though, for what is offered the Red Horse Inn is wildly overpriced. It would benefit from the addition of some trees, and the owners should abandon the styrofoam cups (aside from their environmental nastiness, they're an ugly note and nothing ever tastes good from them).

I don't understand at all why this motel was so praised by visitors.
