“It was just OK...”

It looks a lot prettier in the pictures than in reality. It's clean enough, but needs updating and some renovation. Comfortable bed. Clean in-room Jaccuzi. But, after leaving the room at 5:00 AM to ride 90 miles in the Pan-Massachusetts Challenge, we were quite surprised and really disappointed to find the room was not cleaned yet when we arrived back at 4:15 in the afternoon. We were too exhausted to deal with it other than to inform the desk. They gave us vouchers for breakfast. But, at $300 a night, we expect a lot more. Ultimately, will not return and would not recommend. Sorry.

“Hell at One Main: Worst experience ever...”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2008

We have both traveled the world and stayed at many BnB's for years and this is the worst experience we have ever dealt with.

We checked in to the Inn at One Main after a long day of travel and “redeye” flight. We were very tired and needed to rest. The innkeepers, Christi and Ray Stoltz, received us and showed us to our room. When asked by them about when we’d like to have breakfast, we said we’d try for 8 AM. That evening we went to dinner and returned to our room; our bags had been rearranged while we were out. This was unnecessary and made us feel that our personal space had been violated.

The following morning we woke up late after sleeping through two alarms. One of us went down at 8:30 AM and said we were running late because we were so tired and jet lagged. Christi said she understood stating she thought 8 AM was a bit ambitious after such difficult a day of travel. I said we’d come down for breakfast in about a half an hour and she said it would be alright. It was closer to 9:30 by the time we were ready, but it was too late for Christi. Instead of simply telling us we were too late for breakfast, she berated me in an angry and disrespectful manner regarding how she felt about us being late for breakfast. I apologized politely and she continued to harass me, making suggestions about how our morning should have been arranged to meet her needs. I stated that we were both sorry, but we’d had a difficult day and were slow to get going. She continued to complain and WOULD NOT STOP! I had to walk from the room to get away from the onslaught of complaining and could not believe what I was hearing.

A few moments later, Christi had delivered food to the table and was now complaining to my wife about how she felt and WOULD NOT STOP, even after my wife apologized at least three times and asked her to stop as many times. Christi would not stop and continued to make suggestions about how we “should have just come down without showering.” We both could not believe the unprofessional treatment, condescending tone, and out of control manner that was coming from someone we were paying for room and board services.

Christi finally left the room and we discussed leaving. My wife was so upset that she had to return to the room to get away from the problem. I sat at the table in disbelief as Ray came out and tried to make small talk about what we might do for the days traveling with no apology for the unprofessional behavior. My wife returned and was noticeably upset and could not eat. I ate a bit, but was more interested in leaving. We both felt very uncomfortable, like we’d been chastised by a parent. Christi then returned to the table and tried to make small talk with no apology. We could not look at her as she leaned over a chair right next to me as I was trying to eat. She just leaded forward and stared at us while we were eating! We both ignored her because we felt so uncomfortable and she finally went away. We decided to go to our room to discuss this and decided that we did not feel welcome or safe and felt like we could not trust them. We decided to pay the nights rent and leave.

After packing and loading the car, we asked Christi and Ray that we settle the bill and planned to leave because it was too uncomfortable. This led to even more irrational behavior and accusations by Christi. She said we could go, but that she was going to charge us for all the nights we’d reserved. We tried to reason with her, but it was no use. It was clear to us that Christi was now out to cause insult to injury and would not let us go. I offered several times to pay for the nights stay and she refused stating she’d charge us for all nights without exception. After about 10 minutes of trying to regain some form of sensible discussion and settlement, we had to leave with no closure because the harassment would not stop and the situation was not safe.

We managed to find another place to stay that day (wonderful people at the Sands of Time!). I called my credit card to advise them of the problem. It was with this call that we discovered that Christi and Ray Stoltz had charged us for all nights without authorization. We had originally offered to pay for the night, but after further consideration for these circumstances, we consider the discomfort, verbal abuse, poor treatment and lack of security as a “breach of contract,” and are currently working with friends in the Falmouth community, the Falmouth Chamber of Commerce, and our credit card to gain closure. In addition, we feel very strongly that Christi and Ray Stoltz owe us an apology.

  • Liked — Not one thing. The owners are irrational and vindictive people.
  • Disliked — The owners and the terrible treatment we received.

“Above-Average Stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 August 2008

My husband and I stayed at the Inn at One Main for a wedding we were attending in the Cape that weekend. Overall, we had a good experience. The location of the Inn is excellent; it is quite close to downtown shops and restaurants (about a 10-minute walk).

The first thing we noticed was a huge "For Sale" sign upon walking into the Inn. We inquired about this sign and the innkeepers told us they were in the process of selling the inn. This could be a good thing as although the inn is comfortable and cozy it could use a huge facelift. The steps leading up the front entrance are cracked (and a bit dangerous). Decor is tired and could really use a fresh eye.

Our room was decent in size (we didn't expect anything huge) and the bathroom was small. My husband, who isn't a large man by any means, had problems turning around in the shower. The furnishings were old albeit neat and clean.

The breakfast was delicious and not the least bit healthy :) Breakfast was two courses and the innkeepers were extremely friendly and likeable.

I most likely would not stay here again (I'd probably try some place a bit "newer") but thought the room was good value for the price.

“Great place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 April 2008

The Inn at One Main was a great place to stay the 2 nights I was there. Christi and Ray were extremely helpful in getting me acquainted with the local area and made a really good breakfast. I came from Boston by bus, to attend a conference in Woods Hole, and they helped me figure out the best way to get around the area without a car.

I was looking for literally just a bed to sleep in and some breakfast in morning, so when it comes to how the house was decorated or parking or traffic or anything like that, I couldn't care less so you should read other reviews if those things are issues for you. The room was much more spacious than I imagined from the picture, by the way. And it was the least expensive room I could get in the area that weekend, which admittedly was the deciding factor on me choosing it from the list of hotels here.

If you want a good place to rest and eat good food, which is run by friendly people, I definitely recommend staying with Christi and Ray at the Inn at One Main.

“Wonderful B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 November 2007

Just returned from a 2 night stay at The Inn at One Main with two other couples, and had a wonderful time. Christi and Ray are so friendly and helpful. The house is beautiful, filled with antiques and history. Very convenient location, we walked to town for dinner and shopping. Would definitely stay here again.
