Reading some earlier reviews I am swimming against the tide here but these are my experiences
I have just arrived back from a trip around Boston, the Cape, Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard and I plan to review all the places we stayed via the appropriate thread on Tripadvisor. I will try wherever possible to be objective and review the experience exactly as I found it.
We arrived in Edgartown at the Ashley Inn and following a short delay we were greeted by our host who keenly completed all the financial details and then swiftly set off upstairs to show us to our room leaving us to manhandle our suitcases up the stairs. We are both physically fit so it was no big deal. Following a quick tour of the controls to the air conditioner our host left us to absorb our surroundings. At this point I will try to remain objective and describe the accommodation exactly as we found it. The room was not large but enough to accommodate a queen size bed, two chairs and two bedside tables. There was a private bathroom with shower over bath and a small alcove which contained a set of drawers and a fitted wardrobe. The facilities were functional in that the shower worked, the air conditioning worked and the TV worked – sort of. I should mention that the TV was a 13 inch box type sitting on a simple corner shelf and would not have looked out of place in a $40 roadside motel. Needless to say, as in all good roadside motels, the controller was wrapped in Sellotape to keep the batteries in place and only managed to switch the TV on and off.
The public area downstairs was very nice and the breakfast varied. The downstairs area of the house was very much the upside. The downside was the upstairs bedroom accommodation. General maintenance in our room was poor. Examples of this were cables from the TV nailed to the wall and an electrical junction box connector left dangling below. A further cable from this box passed through a hole punched in the wall leading to the hallway which then supplied the wireless broadband unit. Pipe covers at floor level were either broken or detached from the wall. I have no idea how the bathroom cabinet below the sink stayed together but it was clearly falling apart and no attempt had been made to conceal this. The worst aspect of all was the electric light fitting above the shower bath. The unit had lost its cover and was simply exposing the bulb and lamp fitting. I cannot say who the DIY or maintenance guy was but he is not to be trusted.
Now the subjective bit. The decor in the bedroom was at best tired although some bits of the bathroom looked as if they had been hurriedly painted but to no great effect. The website paints a fairly idyllic picture but considering the detail described above I did not find the accommodation enchanting and taking into account the $839 I paid for 3 nights I expected slightly more. I maybe should have taken these things up with the owner but we were about to return to Europe and had no plan B if it had gone badly. Maybe also we British are not too good at complaining. I will certainly think twice next time.
I hope this helps someone.
