We arrived in the evening to an idyllic, peaceful island setting, nestled in the woods. We were excited to be staying three nights in such a beautiful place for our last trimester to celebrate, rest and relax before our daughter's birth.
We were surprised, however, by what we found when entering the room. The carpet in the entry was stained and dirty, the furniture consisted of straight-back, wooden, ragged chairs and scratched tables - which to say the least is not what we expected from a $330/ night room. The bathroom was even more disappointing, with a Motel 6 plastic-unit shower/ tub combo, and a lousy formica sink.
When we called down to the front desk in the morning to ask for an iron and ironing board, we were told that we needed to go to he main Inn house to get it. NOT the service from an upscale hotel or B&B. They also make you sign some legal form that they say is necessary for the activities, such as a pool, at the Inn. I don't remember ever having to sign anything for the 100 other hotels where we've stayed that have much more than a pool and some trails.
My wife and I were also interrupted one afternoon by a hard knock on the door, by who we presume was the manager or owner - who after less than 20 seconds used her master key to barge in when we didn't answer right away. Thankfully we were at least partially clothed. She proceeded to tell us that the air conditioning setting we chose was too low, and was affecting other guests. We had set the temperature to 72 degrees, so we were puzzled by how such a high-end B&B would have such an ineffective air conditioning system...
When I went down to complain about our experience - which I did without insulting anyone or yelling - I was given a bad attitude and nothing whatsoever as a apology or any effort to remedy the experience. Not so coincidentally, a woman came in at the same time to complain that she had not had her beach towels replenished from the previous day. The manager who had barged in the day before responded to her - "that's probably because you didn't drop off your towels from yesterday - that's why you didn't get fresh ones."
So, that's when we realized that the Inn at Blueberry Hill is actually a cleverly disguised kindergarten, staffed by overbearing summer-camp counselors who are incapable of delivering even two-star service. We would always return to Martha's Vineyard for the beauty and history - but will stay in a private, clean and consistent National brand hotel rather than in this bad-attitude, poor excuse for a B&B.
