We wanted to take a trip up to the Berkshires leading up the Fourth of July to get away from the hustle in the city, and took a shot with Harbour House based on the reviews here on TA as well as some other sites. Suffice to say, we were not disappointed in the least!
The inn itself is beautiful; tastefully decorated with a lovely country charm and serene garden surroundings. It's location is ideal for getting anywhere in the North Berks...only minutes away from Adams, Mt. Greylock and Pittsfield and a short drive to North Adams, Williamstown and Tanglewood. [NOTE: In the area itself my cell reception was non-existent and my wife's was minimal...it is located in a what appears to be a cellular dead-zone at least for AT&T and T-Mobile, just an FYI. After going cold turkey for a day though, I actually enjoyed not having it]. We stayed in Garden Gate and had the twin beds converted to a king...we would not have been able to tell had we not already known - very clean, and comfy, and so quiet that it took us neurotic New Yorkers some time to acclimate to hearing nothing but crickets and the occasional frog with the windows open.
The breakfasts were inspired. I've often found that B&Bs tend to skimp on creativity, where a spinach fritatta becomes the apex of their culinary flair. Not so here. It is very clear that Eva takes pride in her creations, and offers both variety and creativity with the meal. We got an array of colorful choices (literally...on July 4th, she offered up "Red", "White" and "Blue" selections based on the ingredients of the dishes, and let us try some of each). Neither of us were disappointed with anything, and to make it even better, Eva is not strict with the serving times like a number of other places are (obviously you don't abuse that by staggering downstairs past noon and expecting the kitchen to be waiting for you, but all the same, neither of us are early risers and Eva didn't have a problem with this at all, which made for easy-going mornings).
Which brings me to Eva herself...she was the consummate host. Always friendly and accommodating, she took time out to help us make some choices on where to go and what to see in the area. She made dining suggestions based on where we were going to be, and didn't lead us astray once. She was happy to have a conversation with the guests, all the while letting us enjoy our time together and not being intrusive. As for going the extra yard, let me share this: after we had left, we realized that my wife had left her favorite pillow in the room (she always brings it just in case). We figured we should write it off as a sacrifice to the gods of once-over room checks. Eva found it (without us even saying anything), and let us know that she had it, and that she was boxing it up and mailing it back to us. Talk about going above and beyond the usual amount of hospitality!
I would absolutely recommend this for anyone who wants to visit the Berkshires and unwind in comfort!
