“Never Going Back”

To Robert Pascal owner, the Chef and Management of the Harbour Inn, St. Micheals MD:

I have tried to contact Mr. Pascal on at least two occations. He has returned my calls to his credit, however his attention to this matter is not a priority in my optionion. Knowing I have had a bad experience, I would be much more proactive in his place.

The experience my husband and I had at your New Year's Eve event was probably the worst I have ever had. The food was for the most part uneatable. The soup, shrimp and lobster bisque looked like a brown broth with a foam on top, the comment at the table was "this does not look like any bisque I have ever had" and let me tell you it did not taste like it either, not good in any way. The next course was the highlight of the meal the salad and from there it went back down hill. The salmon course was so fishy and mushy I could not eat it, and I notice the others at our table left much on their plates as well. The quail course was dry and over-spice, just not good so I did not eat it, why waist calories on something you don't enjoy, is what I always say. The main course was what should have been a filet for the price we paid, but turned out to be a short rib and lobster over risotto. I ate the rib and was it was ok, but the lobster which I usually love had a funny flavor almost like moldy and the risotto tasted like someone dropped the whole jar on thyme in it, just not eatable. Ok, you would think that maybe the chocolate molten cake, the dessert course would have either ice cream or even whipped cream on it, nope, plain and really not that good. We actually had one the night before at the Carpenter Street Saloon, with ice cream and it was delicious. Lastly, was the chocolate covered strawberries, can't mess that up, right? Wrong! The chocolate was way too thick and perhaps not of good quality, needless to say not eaten.

So dinner is over and we are dancing and the band was really nice but the dance floor, not there. I have never been to an event for dancing that did not prove at least a temporary dance floor. While we are dancing the waiters are passing out champagne for the toast. We notice that because we are not at our seat we did not get our glasses. We hail the waiter to tell him, however he does not make it back in time to toast the new year a midnight. WTH! This was typical of the service experience, minimal and not at all attentive or professional. Really not acceptable on any level in my opinion. We saw the manager on duty run by once. We were never asked how anything was and had to hail our waiter anytime we wanted something. Needless to say we did not leave a tip, I don't think I have ever done that. I think this was due to the fact that when we approached the manager about the meal, she refused to take even a portion of our meal off the bill, instead insisting she could only offer a return meal voucher. I was pretty upset that she said she could not contact the owner at that time. So before I contact my credit card company to refute the charge I have called to convey my story, however it seems that no one there seems to care about our experience knowing full well of our disappointment.

The band stopped playing to our continued disappointment right after midnight, another first, were does this ever happen at a NYE party? We noticed at that almost everyone else had abandoned ship by this time so after we made our plea for a fair return compensation we left to finnish celebrating elsewhere.

We spent the next day in town (we are from Annapolis) and I had mentioned to someone who works in town about our experience. Her reply was that the Harbour Inn used to be very good but in recent years has gone down hill. This made sense to me because my husband and I had a wonderful brunch there several years ago, and that is the only reason I agreed to spend our NYE there and spend $300 for the two of us. We could have had a superb meal elsewhere for that amount.

So to everyone working there at the Harbour Inn, Shame on you! Don't be surprised if this letter shows up on Trip Advisor and other social networks. I want other people to know how much they will be ripped of when they visit you.

I am sorry you did not enjoy your experience. Our New Years Eve party was enjoyed by about 100 people and the comments we received from most of them were glowing. We had the opportunity to get feedback from a handful of guests the following day as well, since many of them were staying in the hotel.

On New Year’s Eve, out of respect for our hotel guests, the live music upstairs wound down shortly after midnight, and the entertainment continued in our lounge downstairs, which you were aware of since you enjoyed dancing there as well.

If you had mentioned your dissatisfaction with your meal while it was being served (and you had ample opportunity given the number of courses) we would have gladly responded at that time.

We take great pride in the level of service we provide and the quality of our cuisine and have received accolades for both. So I am, of course, disappointed that you did not enjoy your experience.

Sincerely,
Robert Pascal

My daughter and I stayed at the St. Michaels Harbour Inn Marina & Spa (SMHIMS) on a Saturday night in January to celebrate my mother-in-law's 90th birthday. We have visited St. Michaels many times and this was the first time staying at the SMHIMS, which is not far from my in-laws' home and right on the water. Our room was a suite that overlooked the harbor and the lighthouse. It was a cold and gloomy January day and the inn is undergoing renovations. Despite this, we had a very spacious room with a good view and there was no trouble at all with construction noise or anything else that interfered with our enjoyment of the property. I meant to use the spa but ran out of time, as we hunkered down in our room to watch movies and eat popcorn. The room was homey and comfortable. On Sunday morning, I took a long walk around town and it was very easy to get from the Inn to the bakery and coffee place in town (we also could have eaten at the inn, but I needed the walk). I should mention that, while the room that we stayed in was a fairly standard hotel room, there were flat screen TVs, really great mattresses and sheets, and the soap, shampoo and other toiletries were more along the lines of what you would find in a luxury hotel. Here is what made our stay especially memorable: on our drive home, we realized that my 11 year old daughter had left her favorite pillow--the one she has had since babyhood--on the bed in the hotel room. It was about six hours after we had left the hotel and I was not optimistic that anyone would have kept this pillow because it really is not in very good shape. I called the hotel with my daughter very upset in the back seat of my car and my wondering what I could do to make the loss of the pillow up to her. Housekeeping had left for the day, but the concierge, Joe Campbell, called the head housekeeper at home to ask her about the pillow. He called me back five minutes later on my cell phone and said that the housekeeper had indeed found the pillow and locked it up in the lost and found at the hotel. When I said that my father in law likely could come over to get the pillow, the concierge told me coincidentally that he would be traveling not far from my home (in central New Jersey) and could meet me near my office to give me the pillow. I am typing this review an hour after having met the concierge at our local grocery store in New Jersey where I met the concierge and got the pillow. My daughter has been reunited with her pillow and everyone is happy. For business, I have stayed all over the world and in some of the best hotels in places like Instanbul, Hong Kong and London and throughout the United States. I can honestly say that I've never gotten this kind of service from a hotel before. Bravo!!! We definitely will go back and, next time, I am going to use the spa!

“New Year's visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 January 2012

My husband and I stayed at St. Michaels Harbour Inn along with another set of friends over New Year's weekend. We enjoyed a wonderful meal at the hotel and had a great time visiting with our friends. The beds were amazing. The harbor views are spectacular and we were lucky enough to have beautiful weather to enjoy walking around town. I would recommend this location to anyone!

“Wonderful service and fabulous spa.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

I stayed at the Inn for Christmas. The staff was friendly and helpful. The view from my balcony was beautiful. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The room decor is dated and they could stand a little renovation but this is not a deal breaker.

“Best part was the view”

My fiance and I were here for our two year anniversary and decided to give this place a shot. We are happy we did. The hotel is under renovation on the outside and it needs one desperately on the inside! We got upgraded to a room with a view of harbour and a in room hot tub with a balcony. All of that was wonderful. At the same time the room condition is some what poor, needs updating, painting, etc. For what we spent it wa a fair value to us.

Room Tip: go for the balcony rooms, nice to be able to sit outside and do nice things on the balcony ; )
