Details...
This was our first experience in a small, home-like Bed & Breakfast. My husband and I booked last minute for a one-night getaway. I chose to stay at Swan Haven during this trip to Rock Hall because of the jacuzzi tub (my husband's only requirement) and the website pictures of the rooms and property.
When we arrived, Ron the new owner/innkeeper was welcoming and informative. He gave us a mini tour and brought us up to our room. My first impression was: this place is really new, clean, and bigger than I imagined. I was relieved (since you never really know you'll get what you see on a website)! I felt their website was an accurate representation of the place. The outside view of yard and dock was much more bland than the colorful pictures, but it is March after all! From looking at the plantings around the place, I would think spring and summer would be very beautiful.
Rooms 8 (ours), 9 and 10 (I peeked in) are upstairs. They have semi-private decks overlooking the water and you can walk down the steps to the yard and dock. The deck and view face NNE, so you can see a nice sunrise, but not the sunset (this was probably my biggest disappointment). In the hall is a shared mini frig -- with ice & wine and water glasses -- plus a reading room.
We reserved and stayed in room #8. Since it was still off-season we paid $168. I thought it was a very nice room and amenities for the price (we've stayed in more expensive places that were not nearly as friendly and inviting as Swan Haven). The room was prettier and bigger than I expected. The bed is a king and very comfortable with big fluffy pillows. There was also a ceiling fan, TV, two chairs (one with a reading lamp), dresser, and two nightstands (both with lamps). I liked reading what other guests had written about their stays in room 8 in the room's guest book.
The bathroom was bigger than I expected, but both my husband and I thought the two-person jacuzzi tub was a bit smaller than we thought from the photos. At just 5'2", I had plenty of leg room and found it very relaxing, but my husband (5'10") was not able to stretch out his legs. The hot water in both the bath and sink was almost instantaneous and we had plenty to fill the tub. The plush towels and nice soaps were welcomed touches.
Sunrise the next morning was pretty and we were entertained by the multitude of waterbirds: a heron, loads of ducks of all sizes, big seagulls, and even an osprey.
Breakfast was continental style, but there was a lot of it...coffee, milk, orange juice, and hot water to make your tea, hot chocolate, or oatmeal; fresh strawberries and bananas; hard boiled eggs; bagels, raisin bread, english muffins, etc with cream cheese, jelly and even those yummy little cheese wedges.
We didn't spend much time out on the dock because it was cold, but it would be a nice place to sit and fish or crab.
For reasonably-priced local dinner go to Harbor Shack. The crabcakes and the fish & chips are great. We were disappointed that Waterman's Crab House wasn't open for the season yet (the locals rave about the food there).
Though we didn't have time to see them, there are several little shops on Main Street. also there is a wildlife refuge and winery nearby.
If you are looking for a relaxing little town, Rock Hall would be a good choice. If you're looking for exciting nightlife, it didn't appear to be the place to visit.
