“New, Clean, Modern, a Pleasure”

Overview...
NEW owner/innkeeper Ron is friendly and informative
Rooms: clean, big, comfortable
Baths: clean, modern, awesome two-person jacuzzi tub!
Breakfast: continental, but nice and plenty of it!

Details...
This was our first experience in a small, home-like Bed & Breakfast. My husband and I booked last minute for a one-night getaway. I chose to stay at Swan Haven during this trip to Rock Hall because of the jacuzzi tub (my husband's only requirement) and the website pictures of the rooms and property.

When we arrived, Ron the new owner/innkeeper was welcoming and informative. He gave us a mini tour and brought us up to our room. My first impression was: this place is really new, clean, and bigger than I imagined. I was relieved (since you never really know you'll get what you see on a website)! I felt their website was an accurate representation of the place. The outside view of yard and dock was much more bland than the colorful pictures, but it is March after all! From looking at the plantings around the place, I would think spring and summer would be very beautiful.

Rooms 8 (ours), 9 and 10 (I peeked in) are upstairs. They have semi-private decks overlooking the water and you can walk down the steps to the yard and dock. The deck and view face NNE, so you can see a nice sunrise, but not the sunset (this was probably my biggest disappointment). In the hall is a shared mini frig -- with ice & wine and water glasses -- plus a reading room.

We reserved and stayed in room #8. Since it was still off-season we paid $168. I thought it was a very nice room and amenities for the price (we've stayed in more expensive places that were not nearly as friendly and inviting as Swan Haven). The room was prettier and bigger than I expected. The bed is a king and very comfortable with big fluffy pillows. There was also a ceiling fan, TV, two chairs (one with a reading lamp), dresser, and two nightstands (both with lamps). I liked reading what other guests had written about their stays in room 8 in the room's guest book.

The bathroom was bigger than I expected, but both my husband and I thought the two-person jacuzzi tub was a bit smaller than we thought from the photos. At just 5'2", I had plenty of leg room and found it very relaxing, but my husband (5'10") was not able to stretch out his legs. The hot water in both the bath and sink was almost instantaneous and we had plenty to fill the tub. The plush towels and nice soaps were welcomed touches.

Sunrise the next morning was pretty and we were entertained by the multitude of waterbirds: a heron, loads of ducks of all sizes, big seagulls, and even an osprey.

Breakfast was continental style, but there was a lot of it...coffee, milk, orange juice, and hot water to make your tea, hot chocolate, or oatmeal; fresh strawberries and bananas; hard boiled eggs; bagels, raisin bread, english muffins, etc with cream cheese, jelly and even those yummy little cheese wedges.

We didn't spend much time out on the dock because it was cold, but it would be a nice place to sit and fish or crab.

For reasonably-priced local dinner go to Harbor Shack. The crabcakes and the fish & chips are great. We were disappointed that Waterman's Crab House wasn't open for the season yet (the locals rave about the food there).

Though we didn't have time to see them, there are several little shops on Main Street. also there is a wildlife refuge and winery nearby.

If you are looking for a relaxing little town, Rock Hall would be a good choice. If you're looking for exciting nightlife, it didn't appear to be the place to visit.

“Avoid Swan Haven”

My group spent a weekend at the Swan Haven Bed and Breakfast. The property is beautiful. The Owner is a nightmare. Despite the fact that we filled up his very expensive B&B he griped that we wanted to use his common room to serve a sandwich dinner -- no one but our group was staying there. He constantly lamented, "I'm all alone here, I can't keep up." Threatened us constantly that if we made a mess, "the group was going to pay". This was said before anyone had a chance to make a mess.

He was a grouch that was constantly intruding into our group and complaining about something. He didn't want our friends that stayed down the street there because they weren't staying there, he didn't want a mess, he didn't want us to go into common areas. He would clean up while you were eating breakfast trying to Hurry you along. It was very tiresome. I predict he won't get any repeat business after the regulars that have been returning for years stay there once.

There are too many nice BandB's at Rock Hall to put up with this.

“Wonderful B & B experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 July 2005

My goup of 7 sailors and spargazers just returned from a week at Swan Haven while competing in the Highlander Nationals sailing regatta. We booked 3 rooms for 6 people and at the last minute added a 7th person to share one of the rooms. We all had a wonderful time. The inn was fully booked the entire week we were there and several of the other rooms had regatta participants as well. My room was at the front of the house and I was not bothered by road noise or any other noise. Our hosts served breakfast earlier than usual each day to accomodate the sailors and we were very pleased with the offering: cereals, fresh baked muffins, boiled eggs, yoghurt, fresh fruit, breads, jams and jellies, juice, coffee, tea etc. The Inn offers 10 rooms and has a large common room where breakfast is served and use by guests is encouraged for games and get-togethers. There is a refrigerator supplied for guest use and bicycles and kayaks are available onsite. Many of the rooms have screened porches or decks, and there are common deck areas available for all. All rooms have private baths, and we can attest to the fact that the air conditioners work well...we had almost brutal heat indexes the entire week we were there. Our hosts were Harry, Diane, and Bosley the springer spaniel. All were very warm and welcoming. Most of our group had never stayed in a B & B before and were a bit nervous about it. Final consensus was overwhelmingly positive...we had a great stay and recommend Swan Haven highly.

“Pretty Setting with Some Problems”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2003

1.Rooms are more expensive than Trip Advisor's posted rates. 2.Be sure to ask what type bath or shower you will have. 3.Immaculate and attractive rooms in pretty setting. BUT noisy, roadside location with thin walls. Can hear traffic and chatting next-door neighbors.
4.Extensive damage on first floor from Hurricane Isabel not acknowledged by owners. No rate reductions despite the damage. 5.Very ordinary, plain, cold breakfast buffet with cereal, fruit, coffee, yogurt, store bought bread and doughnuts. 6.Watch out for several rotted boards when walking on pier in back.
