We just got back from a 3-day weekend at this 24th-street HoJo's and although the bathrooms ARE very small - you can't open/close the door if you sit on the toilet - and the sink is literally only about 10 inches across - we stayed in an ocean front room on the boardwalk for two nights and three days for a little over $400.00. The pool was exceptionally clean and felt great, , you are literall across the boardwalk from the beach, and there is an excellent little restaurant called the Satellite Cafe adjacent to the otel. There is only one elevator, but it is comparable to any other elevator we've used in OC - a little slow but steady.
Regardless where I stay I don't normally expect to have someone hand-deliver extra towels in less than an hour unless I am paying a premium for my room. When we arrived, we noticed only a single wash cloth in the bathroom so I went down to the front desk and asked for not only extra washcloths, but towels and an extra set of sheets for the sleep sofa and had them in my hand within 30 seconds. They do keep extras in a room behind the front desk and had no problem giving me additional.
We encountered no rudeness at all. The front desk was polite the five times I stopped by. When asked if they provided an after checkout changing room, they said they were not so equipped, however they did offer the use of their public bathroom to change. They also said we could use the pool after checkout and could leave our car parked in their parking lot until we chose to leave, none of which were publicized on the web site, but were graciously and politely offered when we asked. The cleaning people said Good morning or Hello when we saw them, and excuse me and thank you when we passed them in the hallways. Although there was some less than spotless areas in our room, you are at the beach for goodness sake, and things get sandy and they get rusty due to the salty ocean air. I figure if you are the type to expect 10-minute delivery of additional lines... if you expect spotless surroundings, and you want only the best, go pay $500 a night at the Hilton. For me and my family, we prefer to enjoy ocean front accommodations right on the boardwalk for about $300 less per night by tolerating a little sand and, in the case of HoJo's, even a small bathroom. Typical of a budget OC hotel/motel, they offer modest accommodations to cover just the basic necessities of a stay.
I would stay here again.
