“American Flophouse”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 October 2011

American Flophouse: is a place that offers expensive lodging, generally by providing only minimal services. Couple this with the fact the Commander Hotel has no affiliation with the local BBB and a no refund policy, it supports the label of an American Flophouse. Very little available parking on the premises, worn out furniture and beds, and nappy carpet. Soap dispensers on the wall, rationed toilet paper and tissues. The Commander Hotel once represented the standard of a non-chain hotel on the boardwalk. Now it represents the Motel standard on the boardwalk. This hotel puts too much emphasis on “you’re paying for the privilege” to see the ocean and uses this as an excuse for charging high rates for a worn out room. The last time I looked at the ocean from the Commander, I noticed there were a lot of other rooms up and down the boardwalk. I recommend you check out some of these rooms and respective rates and you will be surprised what you get for your hard earned dollar.

Room Tip: Even the Captain Suites are worn out.

“Great Hotel”

One of my favorite hotels In OCMD. Stayed here a few times in the past and recently stayed there in the beginning of September 2011. Always clean and the staff is always professional. The location is great and not too far of a walk to the beginning of the boardwalk. Ocean front rooms are fantastic because the hotel is slanted towards the boardwalk....perfect view of the ocean/boardwalk.

“Good value Good location!”

After a lot of research my wife and I decided on the Commander Hotel for our stay in Ocean City. Upon arrival the front desk adivsed us our ocean view room was unavailable and we had been upgraded to an ocean front at no additional charge. First thoughts of the hotel were good. The lobby is nothing spectacular but it was adequate. The room while appearing slightly dated was comfortable and well appointed. The view of the ocean of course was fantastic. This hotel has a great location! My wife and I did not explore much of the hotel so we can not really comment on the other ammenities but we would most definitely return for another stay.

“The only redeeming quality is the view”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

If not for the view I would give this hotel zero stars. First issue was the smell. Noticed it first in the hallways and when we entered the room we couldn't believe the stench. I have no idea what was causing it. We had to keep the door to the balcony open to air out the room. We complained on our way out to the boardwalk and when we came back the stench was replaced by another, at least more pleasant, smell which unfortunately did not last.

Second issue was with the bed. I could barely sleep the first night because the bed felt wet to me. My husband didn't notice so I thought it was just me. The next night he noticed it also. It was right after Hurricane Irene, maybe the rooms got wet? The carpet also felt damp.

Parking is also an issue. Parking on site is limited and the second night we had to park at a deserted lot a few blocks away. Also, as a previous reviewer stated, there was a free-standing clothes closet with no hangars - what's the point of that? And the bedding had definitely seen better days. I could go on and on but I think you get the point.

This is the first review I have ever left for a hotel because considering the price it should have been so much better. I have been going to Ocean City for over 20 years and this hotel has been the worst. I can't believe the people who have left good reviews. Maybe it depends what room you are in? I have noticed that great views get mentioned the most which is probably the only reason this place is still in business.

“Built on the cheap”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2011 via mobile

Room is disappointing. Oceanfront suite, but with two full size beds. We would have preferred one king oe Queen bed. Free-standing clothes closet with no hangers. Two drawers for clothes storage. Small coffee pot. Small sink and counter top. Instead of nice bottles of shampoo and lotion, they have a big black soap dispenser hanging from shower wall! Same thing hanging on wall next to sink! Two cheap and dirty looking plastic chairs on porch. No table. No coffee table in front of sofa. No light on porch. Free WiFi but you have to enter a difficult to remember user/password each time you sign on. Just pulled down the bed to reveal a ripped edge on the blanket. It's a shame, really. I remember this place from when I was a young girl. One of the nicest on the boardwalk. Hallways are hot as Hell. Bottom line, this place was built and decorated on the cheap.
