On three occasions in the past two years, we have been in the Washington/ College Park area for business and research purposes. We like this big, old hotel that Best Western has restored to a neat, almost elegant, hotel. It has about 8 or 9 floors, and has several amenities: a neat little gift shop, a huge swimming pool (indoors) and ample free parking. The complimentary breakfast is one of the best we've had anywhere: eggs, bacon, sausage, oatmeal, waffles, cereal, toast, muffins, fruit, milk, juice, and excellent coffee. I almost forgot to mention the grits (yummmmy!). The hostess, Josephine, was on duty for all three trips. Since we usually stay here for the better part of a week, we felt right at home. We've met guests from Europe and Asia, as well as Americans from numerous states. Driving to College Park is fairly easy and within about 15 minutes (counting traffic typical of a metro area). Getting to DC is a cinch via the Metro. The complimentary Best Western van actually takes guests to and from the subway station just a couple of miles or so away– the last one on the line. Service starts at 8:00 AM. Once you are on the Metro, you really have it made: quick and easy access to government buildings, museums, galleries, etc. When we board the subway back to the motel in the evening, we use our cell phone to notify the hotel when we will arrive at the Lanham Station, and they usually are able to meet us without any delay. Once or twice we were in a hurry and caught a cab to the hotel. There is an excellent Red Lobster across the street (just two or three blocks) and a variety of places to buy fast foods, groceries and other needs. We've stayed here three times, and our only complaint is that party-goers at the club on the main floor occasionally can get a bit loud and boisterous around midnight on Fridays and Saturdays All in all, the hotel certainly meets our needs. It is located right on the interstate beltway, and getting out of town is a whole lot easier than staying in a downtown, expensive hotel. We usually tell the guest clerk that we want a quiet room, away from sound of the elevator and ice machines. Only once did we have a room that was sub-par, but that was early when the hotel had not completed its renovation. We have stayed in other places: Alexandria, Falls Church, and downtown, but our three separate weeks at this hotel convinced us to make it our choice stop when we are in the D.C. area.
