We booked through Hotwire, but I had done research and specifically tried to secure this hotel because of its website which promised free Wifi in guest rooms, a fitness center, and a restaurant and bar on site. The website also presented very appealing photos of the rooms and lobby which don't match up to reality. Upon arrival, we found the bar closed, the gym "currently closed while it is being moved", and the wifi did not work in our room (the excuse given was basically "sometimes inside buildings Wifi doesn't always work").
On top of those issues, we had 3 more complaints: 1) when we checked into our room, we found the bed unmade and trash in the bathroom, as if the housekeeping staff had not cleaned it or the front desk got guest rooms mixed up. We were given another room and in this room, 2) There was a hole in the ceiling in the hallway outside our room, which was dripping water onto the carpeted floor AND ALSO filled with wires! 3) The walls of the hotel room and bathtub had some noticeable mold problems. We could also hear dripping throughout the night. I think it was in my head, but after seeing all of that I couldn't help but feel itchy all night and left fearing we had been plagued with something worse. It seems we were not, luckily, but you get the idea. We really should have just walked out, but it was late and since we had booked through Hotwire we couldn't get our money back anyway.
Staff-wise, the daytime front desk staff was very nice, and the evening staff handled our room switch quickly, but clearly showed her frustration in blaming housekeeping for leaving the first room a mess, and I got the feeling she has had to deal with this before.
To pull a few inaccurate phrases from the hotel website, I would say this hotel is NOT "top-notch", NOT a "warm, clean environment with practical comforts", and I definitely did not "feel at home". I guess we got what we paid for. I hope the owners of this former Sheraton (and possibly former elementary school, judging by the building structure) will either invest in fixing it up so that it meets the bare minimum, or does the humane thing and fold their cards.
