My husband and I traveled to Chestertown to celebrate our Anniversary on Friday, July 2nd 2010. The Imperial Hotel was our choice due to the walking distance to the wonderful BLUE HERON CAFÉ on Cannon Street where we celebrated our anniversary dinner.
Upon arrival we were told that parking is free after 430 on the street. But you will have to pay meter rates until then. Not a biggie since we arrived around 3pm.
The front desk clerk was cordial at best. We were told to bring the ice bucket down if we needed ice and they would be happy to accommodate our needs for ice. We enjoyed a bottle of wine on the 2nd floor veranda. Wonderful asset to the hotel.
While the hotel is in walking distance to such a beautiful town and its historic homes, we were less than impressed by the quality of the accommodations. The room was a queen sized bed room on the second floor that was decent at best. There was a musty smell in the closet, the a/c unit seemed loud and working diligently to produce cool air. The bathroom needed wallpaper repaired(rolling down off the upper wall @ ceiling) as well as paint in the ceiling of the bathroom and walls. Most of the bathroom ceiling paint was peeling especially over the shower area.
Early Saturday morning after a horrible night sleeping in a less than firm mattress- only way I can describe it is that it was so lumpy, we were greeted by cockroaches in the bathroom . We immediately decided to check out and had enough of this! We went down to the front desk(730am) and found no one at the desk to check out so we could offer our concerns about the hotel. We literally left our key on the front desk and were then in search of breakfast. Breakfast/brunch does not begin until 9am. Seriously 9am???? Luckily we found a fresh coffee urn and paper cups in a nearby waitress work area and were on our way out!
Traveling around the world, I can honestly say that we have stayed in better hotels. Being a person who worked in the hospitality industry for 10 years, this is truly been our “top three” worst accommodations to date.
