I really wanted to love this hotel, but it would only be fair to give it a 'like.'
The downside is the facility itself, and it was difficult for me to close my eyes to the shortcomings in order to enjoy the pluses.
After a minor GPS mis-hap (we ended up traveling through the Fast Food mecca of Glen Burnie), we found the Concierge and check-in smooth and courteous. It's a small lobby and now that our daughter is a teenager I was happy to have a ground floor room with easier access to everything.
The room (two full-size beds) was suitably roomy and included a good-size fridge. It did not have a built-in closet, but instead a large wooden wardrobe with iron and board inside.
I did my now first checklist item to check for bedbugs and the sheets and mattress were fine. After that...it's pretty much get what you pay for. I feel confused because the level of customer care is superior, but the furniture is all very badly scuffed (as in what you'd see at a second-hand warehouse), the carpet old and frankly, filthy in the corners, and the bathtub had rust stains all around the fixtures.
I can't say it's not surface clean - but the maids come around so early (9am) that if you have a 'do not disturb' sign they leave a note saying you 'sorry we missed you.' Hence, our room was not cleaned during our two night stay. Even though we went out for the day at noon, they did not bother to come back to clean.
For me, the unmade bed and used towels only compounded the glaring dirt-marks on the walls and the scuffed dressers. On the other hand, we felt compelled to leave a tip for the 'cleaners' because the staff was generally so nice.
My husband seemed to love the place as for him it met all his basic needs. The free breakfast was great (standard Hampton Inn and super-friendly kitchen staff). The gym...3 machines in a room with a mirror, still provided a little exercise, and the parking was safe and plentiful.
There are 3 good restaurants literally across the road and a movie theater basically on premises; then across the main highway there is a very large mall. The mall (Bowie Towne Center) would technically be walking distance, but due to the highway, it's safer to drive over. It's anchored by a Macy's, Barnes & Nobles, Ann Taylor, etc. as well as a really great supermarket (Safeway).
This is truly a mixed bag. I found the room downright grungy but otherwise this was a good stay. I didn't really sleep well - the mattress was extremely well worn - and I did spot two tiny (baby) unidentified bugs. Also, I found it unusual that the handbook suggested that you don not leave any valuables whatsoever in your room. So...a solid upgrade of this place would be in order.
Might stay there again because they really hit the mark on most of the vital criteria and the location was perfect for just outside Washington DC.
Room Tip: Tip: Great location for the Thanksgiving Holiday. I went across the street to the very large mall on...
