“Far less than I would expect from a suite”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

I stayed at the DoubleTree Bethesda for two nights over the weekend. Since I've enjoyed suites at other DoubleTree hotels, I decided to go for a suite again. Definitely a wise choice as even the junior suite at this hotel is incredibly spacious. When you first step into the room, the bathroom is directly in front of you with the sitting area off to the right and the bedroom to the left. The ceilings are really high, with a floor to ceiling window in the sitting area. Unfortunately that is the only window as the bedroom has none. Really disappointed about that.

Both rooms have large flat screen t.v.'s. The sitting room has a microwave and mini-fridge which was really helpful when storing/heating up leftovers. The microwave is very old though--does not even have a digital screen, just a knob you turn for the timer. The mini-fridge also looked a bit beat up. But both items proved useful nonetheless.

The sofa-bed in the sitting room was by far the worst I've seen at any hotel. After opening up the sofa I discovered that not only was the mattress ripped it was also missing both the fitted and flat sheet. After pulling the flat sheet off of the bed in the bedroom, I put it onto the sofa bed and tested the mattress. It was terrible; I could feel every spring and coil in the mattress pressing into my back. I ended up asking housekeeping for a blanket so I could add some cushion to this awful mattress. Thankfully, I was not the one sleeping on the sofa bed. The mattress in the bedroom was very comfortable. I definitely enjoyed the down blanket and down filled pillows.

Although the bathroom was small, but it was well lit with a large mirror, updated fixtures and a decent size tub. There was also another sink right outside the bathroom door which was great with more than one person trying to get ready in the morning.

The wi-fi is absolutely abysmal. It was impossible to watch videos on my laptop as they buffered repeatedly every few minutes. I ended up having to tether my phone to my laptop to remedy the situation.

One amenity I was surprised they had was the pantry. I am a Hilton Gold member so I am not sure if this amenity was exclusive to Hilton members or all guests. The pantry is a little lounge you access with your room key. Inside the lounge are snacks, juice, water, even ice cream and frozen breakfast sandwiches. Very nice!

If you're looking for more than a snack, the food at the hotel is also quite good. The room service menu is a bit on the small side, but there are more than a few items that were definitely above average. The room service attendants always brought the food quickly--they were friendly and very helpful. I was really annoyed at the number of times my order had items missing though. I ordered steak twice and both times I did not receive a steak knife. I ordered a side of seasonal berries which stated it came with sugar and cream but I only received sugar. I ordered a cobb salad which was missing all of the fixings except the cheese and dressing. I ordered fruit pancakes which were supposed to have bananas, blueberries and lemon curd but only got the bananas. Maybe they should take a look at their own menu before they continually send up incomplete meals. Again, the food was good but my orders were repeatedly missing items.

I'd be willing to stay at the hotel again if there are rooms with more than just one window, better wi-fi, and my room service orders were correct. The staff are all professional and friendly so that was a big plus. Hopefully my next visit will be better.

Thank you for taking the time to share this feedback regarding your recent stay. Obviously we did not meet all your expectations, however your time in sharing the positives is very much appreciated. unfortunately only one corner floor to ceiling window is in every room, except room for our two room executive suites where the bedroom and living room each have a window. I would like to invite you back to stay if you want to with T-1 speed and room service on me. please contact my office directly so I can make the reservation for you. Again many thanks for letting me know of your experience

“Excellence is in the details..”

My husband and I stayed at the Bethesda Doubletree this past Friday and Saturday night. We were celebrating my husband’s birthday, and we just wanted to get away. Overall, the hotel was a good place to get the head down, but there is much room for improvement here. The positives first: The room was clean and a good size. Bed and pillows were comfortable. We paid for an upgraded room on the 12th floor so we had a nice view of Bethesda, and there was no street noise.
As for the negatives, there just seemed to be many little things that went wrong. We arrived after 11 pm on Friday, and the front desk clerk was not friendly – at all. In fact, we felt like we had interrupted something. We were exhausted and went right to bed, but my husband could not sleep due to the noise from the heater/AC. It did not bother me. When we awoke on Saturday morning, I wanted to check my email, but could not get on the “free” wifi network. I called the front desk for help and was told to call the help desk. I spent 20 minutes on the phone with the help desk only to be told the problem was with the wifi in my part of the hotel. Just a thought, but wouldn’t it have been a great customer service gesture if the front desk had checked the wifi network for me before wasting my time asking me to call the help desk? Once the wifi network was fixed, I logged on to check my email and discovered wifi is only free for slow internet access that allows you to check email and not much else. If you need to stream video or do any heavy browsing, you will need to pay $10 a day. The only reason we chose the Doubletree over the Hyatt (which is located at the Bethesda metro) was the free wifi. The Doubletree is about a 10-minute walk from the Bethesda metro, and about 20 minutes from the entertainment district.
We enjoyed the nice Crabtree and Evelyn toiletries, but our cleaner must have too – because when she cleaned our room Saturday morning, she took all our slightly used toiletries and did not replace them. We were left with a bar of soap. I did not notice the toiletries were missing until I was in the shower Sunday morning with wet hair and no shampoo! The room also has a little Wolfgang Puck coffee maker. Our cleaner restocked with decaf coffee and did not give us any creamer. The hotel did not seem particularly crowded, so I can’t believe she had run out of toiletries, coffee AND creamer? Maybe the cleaner was having a bad day. I was also concerned with the security of the hotel. Several times we entered from the street and walked to the elevator without passing a staff member (the front desk was frequently unmanned). No keycard access is required for the elevator, so the floors are easily accessible to the public. We had breakfast buffet at the Doubletree before leaving, and it was not worth the price. There is an Original Pancake House near the hotel, which is much better and cheaper.

“Nice property”

Very large king sized rooms. Rooms very clean. Bathroom a bit small but well stocked. So much extra wasted space they could have put a microwave and small refrigerator in the room. Coffee available in room. Starbucks in the lobby. Lounge very expensive. $10.00 drinks for average liquor. Parking garage $10.00 per day. Free lot on weekends across the street behind a gas station . Free wifi for slower speeds and $10.00 for faster speeds.

“Very freindly staff”

I was impressed at the friendliness of all staff especially the front desk personnel. When you check in you get a warm cookie. The rooms are above average and the bathroom are remodeled and very clean. They have new TV's. The heating system is a bit loud and the sound-proofing could be better. This hotel is easy access to I-270 and they offfer a shuttle to the metro, although it i9sn't a bad walk. The valet parking was only $10 per day on weekends. Comfortable beds and great towels. I liked this hotel.

“Nothing special but close to NIH”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 January 2012

After years of visiting NIH and staying at the Hyatt, the doubletree offered an interesting alternative. Closer to NIH but farther from metro. Rooms are unexceptional (I even upgraded to a "deluxe room"), but large flat screen TVs and nice gym. Quiet, good access to Bethesda restaurants by back door. I think I might stay here again instead of hyatt, but time will tell.
