“Just okay”

We arrived late on Friday and were greeted by an employee, which was fine. The next morning, during breakfast we were served by who we assume was Don. No welcome, no hellos, no thanks for choosing us. Rainy weekend, not the B & B's problem, but they were no help in trying to gear us towards rainy day options except for a piece of paper laying on a table. A little one on one would have been appreciated. We headed to Cape Cod and the owners of the B & B there were extremely friendly and gave us a map with a ton of places and restaurants that they suggested (and also what to stay away from). Don and Javier could use a lesson from them. Also, B & B in Cape Cod put our homemade cookies every night, again, nothing at this B & B. Drive to Bar Harbor wasn't bad. A few really good restaurants in S/W Harbor. Again, nothing was suggested to us, we found them on our own.

I must take a moment and apologize to this guest for my lack of attention that morning but I remember the day very well. Unfortunately there was an emergency with one of our guests staying in one of our cottages that that took most of my time and attention. An ambulance had to be called and the guest transported to the hospital. Needless to say the safety and support of this guest had to be my first priority. I had to attend to that, be with the guest and family until the ambulance arrived and at the same time serve breakfast and handle guest departures. As a small business it was a hectic and stressful morning to say the least. By the time the situation was under control these guests had left for the day. It is a priority of mine to see that all our guests feel welcome and have the information they need to enjoy their stay. I hope to have an opportunity to make up for my lack of attention for these guests sometime in the future.
Although we do not serve cookies in the rooms at night we do have home baked goods set out each afternoon in the common room with coffee, a fine selection of teas and fruit . Our guests seem to enjoy this after a day of hiking and biking Acadia. We find this a healthier alternative to cookies before bed.
No two inns are alike and that is the beauty of a bed and breakfast experience. We appreciate the feedback expressed in this review as it offers us an opportunity to recognize where we may have gone wrong and to do better next time .Our guests are our first priority and we are committed to assuring the best possible stay during their visit to Acadia.

“Great location with a rich history.”

There is a great commons area for those rainy days. Some rooms are a bit small, but typical for houses of that era. Good breakfast, with a relaxing front porch.

“It was a very pleasurable place to stay overall.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2011

The harbor cottage inn was a lovely bed & breakfast overall. The breakfast was delicious and in a lovely setting. The service was sensational. We were just under the impression it was a little closer to bar harbor, which is where we wanted to spend most of our short trip! Oh well, it was still lovely!

“It was OK...probably wouldn't return”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

We stayed at the Inn in early September and thought it was just OK and here is why.
1. We did not like the location - but that was because everything we wanted to do started In Bar Harbor which is easily a 15 minute drive with no traffic. We wanted to rent bikes and be shuttled into Acadia - which can only be done out of Bar Harbor. So we drove into BH and had to find a place to park in order to do this. The Inn suggested renting bikes and a bike rack near the hotel, then driving to Acadia and parking. Parking can be tough to find in Acadia as well - bikes racks are a hassle. We wanted to spend the entire time in Acadia biking and hiking - and logistically BH location is easier. Maybe in the middle of July the crowds would be tedious in BH - but they weren't when we were there.
2. Our room was large enough - but difficult to navigate. There were tiny wire bedside tables which are useless and unstable if you want to put a book (not large enough) and a glass of water (top uneven and water glass unstable) by your bed.
3. The bathroom was tiny - I had to move a small table from the room into the bathroom to navigate.
4. Even though we left towels on the floor to be changed they were hung up on the racks. Damp the next day.
5. They had black washcloths labeled "make-up" which was nice. That was the only thing that suggested they realized woman stay at the hotel. They had shampoo, no conditioner. No plastic shower cap...yet they had other amenities.
6. When we arrived they told us breakfast was either at 8 or 830 depending on what room we were staying in. Frankly we like to eat around 7 and get going. The first day we had breakfast at 8 - it was decent. Apparently they trade off between sweet and savory every other day. I do not like sweet breakfast(pancakes, crepes etc). The staff is ordered to tell you the next days breakfast menu is "a surprise". Yet there is a sign in the living room that asks you, out of courtesy, to inform them if you will not be having breakfast the next day. Ok - if you tell me what you are serving I will tell you if I will be there. Sort of a one way street. If you do not want their breakfast at 8 am (dont be late or you will be glared at) or 830 am, there is a selection of whole fruits (think apple or banana), and either corn flakes or granola.
7. There are a couple decent restaurants in town...but I think I would try elsewhere.

This review makes several interesting points that we are pleased to address.
1. When a guest makes a reservation with us we are careful to point out that we are not in Bar Harbor but in Southwest Harbor which is 11 miles away on the SW part of Mt Desert Island. The majority of guests choose to stay with us just for that reason. SW Harbor is a lovely alternative for a quieter experience with great access to Acadia as the town is surrounded by the Acadia where some of the most beautiful hikes, ocean and mountain views and lakes are located. The closest entrance from the inn is less than a mile. Yes the carriage roads are on the Bar Harbor side but there is no need to go all the way to Bar Harbor to access them. We know the perfect place to park without a hassle. In addition SW Harbor has some of the finest restaurants and shops on the island in walking distance to the inn. Our local bike shop Southwest Cycle will provide all the necessities for a great day of biking and a free shuttle service also offers an opportunity to not have to use your car at all.
2. The side tables in this room are indeed small but offer a handy place to put your evening drink and a good book. We have never been told that they are unstable but be assured that we will make sure that they are both functional and stable or replace them.
3. This bathroom while not gigantic is very functional, bright and offers a full size medicine cabinet and small table for storing necessities. With all due respect I do have to say that the amount of make-up brought by this guest was, by far, more than I have ever seen in any guest room ever. I can’t imagine any bed and breakfast having adequate space for such a large quantity but we will do our best to expand storage in this room.
4. No excuse here. The towels should have been changed as this is our policy. Somehow our housekeeping staff made an error. I hope this guest will please accept our sincere apology for the mistake. Had it been brought to our attention we would have changed the towels immediately.
5. We are a certified “Environmental Leader” in the hospitality business in Maine and our amenities are packaged in 100% biodegradable fairly expensive packaging. We therefore choose to use a combination shampoo/conditioner to cut down on waste. Plastic shower caps are available upon request as we keep a small supply to again eliminate waste. We are happy to hear that the make-up towels which are not disposable were helpful.
6. Unfortunately as a small business there is no way to serve a full breakfast in a cost effective manner outside our regular breakfast hours. A continental breakfast can be made available at just about any time. We do alternate between a savory and sweet main entré each day but there are always alternatives on the continental menu. Along with organic cereals and granola there is hand cut fresh fruit salad served every day and we are happy to make toast or fry eggs on the sweet days if a guest requests it. We are sorry not to have been asked. Our breakfast is not a “surprise” Our evening innkeeper just didn’t know for sure what we were serving and was embarrassed to say so. Our great staff are typically students from Europe and do a wonderful job. Communication however can sometimes be an issue. Guests are usually most understanding.
7. As far as restaurants are concerned, several award winning restaurants are located in walking distance to the Harbour Cottage Inn.

Thanks for reading this long response. We are certainly not perfect but we do our best and get it right most of the time. I can only ask these guests to accept our apology and to ask them to give us another opportunity to serve them. Unfortunately we were not given an opportunity to make things right during their stay. Thanks again!

“Excellent alternative to Bar Harbor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 September 2011

My boyfriend and I stayed at this B&B over this past Labor Day weekend. We loved being away from all the tourists in Bar Harbor. The location was great, close to restaurants and to drive to all the sights in Acadia. The breakfast every morning was delicious and the service was excellent. Cristina checked us in late on Friday night and had great recommendations for restaurants. We stayed in the Sloop which was a little small, but got a peak at the Schooner which looked lovely. That would be my room choice for next visit. Rooms were clean and quiet. Dan (the innkeeper) was a gracious host. I definitely recommend this over staying in Bar Harbor.

Room Tip: Try to get the Schooner room, it looked lovely. We stayed on top floor which was very quiet.
