“Cigarette Smoke. Smell of Smoke. Poor attitude”
Cigarette Smoke. Smell of Smoke. Poor attitude.
The main building is a smokers paradise. I called the hotel and asked for a non-smoking room. I explained it was important to me. The woman on the phone explained that the main building was entirely and totally smoke free. It is a small three store building, containing 11 basic hotel rooms with balconies. There are also a variety of individual rooms on the property that allow smoking. Those are in individual one-story buildings some distance from the main building. Again, she confirmed that the main building was all smoke-free rooms. When we arrived, the stench and smell of smoke was so strong in the lobby, I could barely stand there to get our key. It was truly distressing to the point I was having a physical reaction to the VERY strong smell of smoke. This was not the smell of one individual guest, but of a constant stream of smokers. When I entered our room, the smell of smoke was terrible. It had permeated the carpet, the furniture, and the bedding. It was everywhere. I opened the balcony door to air out the room and smell was worse on the balcony. I was so distressed. I could not even sit on the balcony to escape the smell of the room ….and enjoy the outdoors because the smell of smoke was so bad. I was living a nightmare. I did not know how I would sleep there. I spoke with the lady at the front desk. They do not wear name tags so I do not know who I spoke with each time. She offered me a deodorizing spray. I sprayed nearly half a can, and still the room was unbearable. I asked for another room and that was not possible. She became a bit aggressive and said “I am not smoking.”. I was surprised by the aggressive response, but did not know what to make of it. I had specifically asked for a non-smoking room and that was not provided. She then said, “Well, I can’t stop the guests from smoking on the balconies.” This made no sense. Why would a guest that wants to smoke choose a “non-smoking” room? Non-smoking rooms have no ashtrays…even on the balconies. All of this was absurd.
The next morning I saw three employees taking a smoking break, directly outside the lobby and directly under my room. All three were smoking. This was Illegal according to Maine Law which specifically states: “Employers may ONLY allow smoking outdoors, at least 20 ft. from entryways, windows, vents and doorways, and not in any location that allows smoke to circulate back into the building.” They were standing directly in front of the building and the smoke was making their so called Non-Smoking building a smoke filled building. Any time, I came or left, there were 2 -3 employees a few inches from the doorway smoking. This went on all day. The Main building was full of smoke because the front desk and cleaning employees smoked all day long. It was not a random guest, but the staff. The situation was awful. No wonder the attitude was hostile towards me. It is clear that this hotel will never have a non-smoking room.
Another word about the Cleanliness and Hygiene. YUK. There was no toilet seat cover, as if this was the third world. Just a bare seat. The dirt in the rail of the sliding window that had been there for months. Fur balls, and cobwebs. Cobwebs that had collected their own dirt and hair. No one had put a vacuum in the railing area. It was a very minimal cleaning attempt that overlooked this important place to clean. Very basic hotel room. Unfriendly staff. Hotel guests are clearly interrupting their day.
