“Quiet getaway”

My wife and I along with our daughter and her husband stayed in the cottage nearest the water. Accomodations are simple but adequate, with a bedroom, a loft, a bathroom with shower, living room, dining area, and kitchen. Great view of the water just a few steps away. We didn't hear another soul the entire time there, and it served as a nice launching pad for day outings. We have not stayed in the hotel proper, so I can't compare the the accomodations there, but we couldn't have been happier with our stay. There was a small fireplace and a very capable wall heater with good temperature control. The kitchen is quite small but adequate for simple endeavors like breakfast.

Room Tip: Cottages near the water are quiet and offer a nice bit of privacy.

“Home Away From Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

The wonderful management at the Claremont creates a welcome environment that brings us back, year after year, to this charming historic spot. Rooms are romantic and very comfortable. Location and views are breathtaking. Love the croquet, of course!

“A place to go back to, year after year”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

The Claremont has been our East Coast vacation home for the last 17 years. It's a long flight AND a long drive from CA but even when we say it will be our last year, it never is. Many friends have joined us, and have also fallen in love with the charm, the history, the incredible location and the friendly helpful management. The main building is beautiful but we love the W cottages with their view of it, the lawn, and the Sound.

Room Tip: We love Cottage W-4 for the location, two bedrooms and kitchen But beware the tiny bathroom. It als...

“Flawless”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

A long drive from Montreal, it was a relief to arrive here. Outstanding location. The bay view from our room and large balcony was a real pleasure. Impeccable room, well equipped. The restaurant, tough lead by a small team, was a great surprise. Although you can dine in Southwest harbour or Bar Harbor, we had all our meals there. All seafood dishes were outstanding. The wine list is very well priced. Acadia park is a short drive away. Really worth the price.

“An elegant summer hotel that captures another day.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 October 2011

We have stayed here twice and will likely return next summer. This is an 1883 hotel that has been carefully restored and preserved, with an elegant restaurant added. It can be a little precious, what with the croquet courts and tournament, but that affectation is merely charming in this place.

The summer staff, aside from managers, is largely Eastern European young people in Maine for the summer. That can make for some interesting communication opportunities, but they are uniformly charming and helpful. You will find young people from Eastern Europe all over. We found some working behind the sandwich counter at Gott's store on the way to Bass Harbor (great whoopie pies there).

My family used to vacation in the area fifty years ago so it was a pleasure to return. I was pleased to learn that my good friend's parents had met when his mother rode up on her bicycle to deliver eggs at the Clarmont where his family was staying, as they did each summer, for a month at the Claremont. That would have been in the 1920's. Lovely to have that bit of history. And I'm sure the hotel looked much the same.

We would also recomment two local restaurants: Red Sky and Fiddler's Green. Both very fine.

Room Tip: Try to get an ocean side room: they are quieter. Also, the Phillips House is a good and quieter plac...
