“Gracious hosts, wonderful breakfasts, great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 July 2011

We spent 2 nights at this lovely B&B and would gladly return. Our hosts Frank and Patricia were personable and friendly but in no way intrusive. We truly felt like guests in their lovely historic home, which I think is the essence of a good B&B experience. We appreciated the tasteful decor, the Persian rugs, the well-stocked personal library of our hosts. Nothing was lacking in comfort or convenience. The breakfasts were gourmet quality.
It was an extra treat to know that we were sleeping in the same room that Eleanor
Roosevelt had slept in.
In our opinion, the one person who wrote the very negative and malicious set of comments about this B&B was entirely out of touch with the reality of it. We say this as travellers who have stayed in many B&B's over the years.
In our experience, Watchtide is one of the better ones.

“A lovely place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 June 2011

This is the third time we've stayed at Watchtide and we recommend it highly. The Inn itself is a charming 1700 building and the grounds are lovely, the back lawn stretches almost down to the bay. We love the quirky old rooms, and the stories the Innkeepers are willing to share about the people who have stayed in them. The public rooms, the library and the sunporch which stretches across the entire back of the inn, are a pleasure to relax in. The hosts are welcoming and gracious, the breakfasts are to die for. We come for a few days of peace and pampering each year, and we'll be back.

“Horrible!”

My first impression as I pulled into the driveway was not good as the grounds were overgrown and the paint on the house was pealing. When we walked onto the porch we were greeted by the host telling us they had a rough winter which caused the paint to peel. Wen we walked into the house we noticed a strong odor which turned out to be our host. She was dressed shabby and was dirty. Certainly not what we expected, considering we have stayed in many Bed and Breakfasts over the years and never had a situation like this. We were shown to our room which was not clean at all. Our host informed us that in order to be eco friendly she only washed the towels every four days. I went int the bathroom which was filthy, the toilet was stained, quite disgusting! There were two windows in the room, I tried to open both of them and the French grids in both of them fell out. There was no way I could stay in this B and B, it was gross. We left forfeiting our deposit of $240.00 for four nights, because the hostess refused to return any of it to us.

In the six years we have operated Watchtide Bed and Breakfast there have been many reviews of the Inn on internet web directories, travel guides and magazines. We have also received numerous cards, letters and emails from guests telling us how much they enjoyed their stay with us. All of these have been favorable. We have never received an unfavorable review until now -- the review titled "Horrible!". It was written by a person who spent less than fifteen minutes at our facility.
Watchtide occupies an historic building listed on the National Register and is over 200 years old. Older buildings require continued maintenance and Maine winters often add to the burden. There are repairs and repainting every spring and when spring rains are constant and extend nearly into July, as they did this year, the work may be delayed and peeling paint may be visible until the work is completed. Our landscapers were also delayed in completing their regular spring maintenance. Attribute blame to the weather, not our negligence as the reviewer implied.
As for the responses to other comments in the review, travelers might look to our many favorable reviews in which our guests note the warm and welcoming attitude of the innkeepers, attentiveness and appearance of our staff, cleanliness of the facility, creative menus and food service presentation and hospitality to assure every guest's comfort and pleasure.
We strive to earn reviews like these in which our guests speak of our Inn in favorable and positive terms. Our objective is to make our guests happy. Considering our reviews, we have accomplished this in the past, and we shall continue to do so.

“Maines Most Gracious Hosts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 May 2010

Historic building with a lovely sun porch, and adequate rooms. The hosts Pat and Frank were absolutely gracious, friendly folks who shared their recommendations of the area. Their genuine warmth and hospitality were a definite bonus to our visit.

“A week of creative, beautiful, delectable breakfasts at this charming B&B”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 June 2009

We selected this B&B because of its attractive, well-organized website and proximity to several towns on the Maine coast, without being in the more congested areas. We were pleased that the couple who own and manage the house could accommodate our vegetarian diet. The menu changed every day and included fruits, breads, and entrees that were skillfully prepared and artistically presented. Such variety! With the exception of the coffee, orange juice, and butter, there were no repeats over the course of 7 mornings. The gracious hosts Pat and Frank were engaging and helpful with suggestions of places to visit or eat. We chose our room because of its view of the ocean. The other rooms were larger than ours yet we had adequate space for sleeping and dressing. Would only recommend The Brigadier room if you can manage living in close quarters with your roommate/partner and welcome that adventure. A favorite in-room activity was looking out the window for the resident foxes and to see the ocean through the break in the trees. There are lovely common rooms where guests can read, play games or simply relax. An eclectic library is available for guest use. The house is located right on Route 1, the main coastal road. Our room was in the rear of the house and we could hear a little road noise from passing trucks. We especially enjoyed the skylight in the bathroom which we could open.
