“It's All True!”

Yes, the previous reviewers had it right - Morrill Mansion is indeed a gem in Portland! We spent a long weekend in January at this beautiful and clean B&B and enjoyed it immensely. The rooms and breakfasts have been described fully in other reviews. Food and snacks were terrific, and I don't know why David bills breakfast as continental, as it was much more than that. There was a hot entree every morning, in addition to the wonderful custards, fruit crisps, fresh fruit, and many other items (not to mention the yummy afternoon snacks!). While it was noted in other reviews that the guests sit at separate breakfast tables, it was very easy to initiate conversations with others if desired.

The B&B's location was much closer to the museums than we had expected, and it wasn't that long a walk to the Old Port area. While it was quite cold and icy the weekend we visited, we didn't feel the need to take a cab at all, even late at night. Many interesting restaurants are within walking distance, and Boda, the Thai restaurant, has excellent, half-priced tapas after 9:30 on Sunday nights.

I peeked in all the rooms, and you can't go wrong with any of them. The halls are carpeted, keeping it quiet throughout. David is a gracious and accommodating host, and is very helpful with recommendations. Morrill Mansion will definitely be at the top of our list for our next visit to Portland.

“a treasure in Portland”

We were on a 10 day driving tour through the New England, and would spontaneously look for accommodation when we were ready to stop for the night. We always were lucky and happy with what we found but the gem was the Morrill Mansion which had 2 rooms available for the night (we are two couples) at the best (and reasonable) rate we had yet been offered. Both rooms were spacious and quaintly decorated, in keeping with the old-world style that these B&B's in old mansions do so well, and each with a very comfortable king bed, and good sized bathroom. There was a communal tea making/coffee facility right outside our doors, in the hallway. (we hadn't seen this in any of the hotels/B&B's where we had stayed since starting our trip, 7 days earlier.) There was a also a very well-equipped sitting room on the second floor, with a TV, library, games, DVD's, fridge and loung chairs, and a big plate of cakes on the table (we didn't realise at the time that these were the Maine sweet specialities of whoopie pies!) David, our host, was very welcoming, and helpful, and recommended some restaurants in walking distance. We choose the French restaurant which was excellent (and the young waitress was genuinely friendly and professional in her service) The breakfast next morning was also excellent and different - lobster soufle was the hot dish. It certainly was a treasure.Thank you David very much for providing us with such a lovely accommodation and service while we were overnighting in Portland.

“Warm and welcoming”

My spouse and recently spent a weekend at Morrill Mansion in Portland, ME.
One of the things we loved is that it's close enough to downtown to walk but just far enough away to be in a quiet neighborhood. David is a wonderful innkeeper, we had a great conversation during breakfast about good places to eat in Portland and he had some great suggestions of places we hadn't heard of.
The room (The Burnham)we stayed in was warm and comfortable and had a huge bathroom, with jets in the bath tub. Loved it. And there was a wonderful sitting room on the second floor where our room was that had homemade baked goods and an electric kettle alway full of hot water to make tea or coffee. And there was a nice glass bowl in our room stocked with chocolate. Awesome.
The only thing I'll add is that if you are the type that goes to a B+B for a big family style breakfast with all the fixins around a big table, this is not it. The breakfast room was cafe style with tables for two and a buffet in the next room. There's plenty to eat, fresh fruit, bagels, and there was french toast one day in a hot warmer. I actually prefer this because in the AM, I just want to sit quietly with my spouse.
But next time we go to Portland, we'll want to go back to Morrill Mansion, no doubt.

“Great personal touches”

I'm so glad we decided to go the B&B route on our weekend getaway to Portland. We could have
stayed at a big hotel, but the Morrill Mansion had so much more character! The only room available
was the Morrill Suite-which sleeps three, but we were glad we booked it. The extra room provided a
great spot to hook up the computer or sit and read by the window. The bed was very comfortable, and the antique furnishings made you feel like you were back in the 1880's.
It's the little things that made our stay special- the treats in the room, the mini-fridge with bottled water which came in handy after our morning run. Also, the common room always had coffee, tea,
hot chocolate and goodies ready for the taking. (You have to have the woopie pie!) Breakfast was awesome-lobster/egg souffle, raspberry custard, healthy grain cereals, fresh fruit...yum!
Morrill Mansion is about a 20 min walk into town. If you opt to drive, parking garages charged $3.00
for the first hour, $2.00 after that. If you get into town early during the day, you may have luck finding a parking meter. But the walk into town is nice. Beautiful neighborhood-I would love to read up the history of some of these homes! Dave has a great listing of recommended restaurants. From Portland Pie company to Ribolita, the food was awesome!

“A Fabulous Retreat”

We stayed there last in May 2011 as part of an anniversary getaway. We could not believe all of the amenities. The mini fridge was stocked with water and there was more available if needed. Chocolate treats were in the room as well. The library on the 2nd floor has tons of DVDs, board games, and home baked snacks, which we devoured at every opportunity. I was concerned about the walk to downtown, but it didn't take long at all and the neighborhood was charming. The breakfast was absolutely incredible. The lobster souffle was amazing, but I had to warn my husband that I cannot cook like that, so he'd better enjoy it while he could. Plenty of tea choices for the non coffee drinkers. David, the owner, is very helpful and sees to every detail. I would recommend this place and stay there again in a heartbeat.
