We stayed two nights mid-October in the Garden room which is a two room suite (bedroom and sitting room) without a closet or armoir, and private bathroom with shower only ,and outdoor balcony.
I did have a chance to view some of the other rooms in the house which were more charming/romantic although smaller in size than the Garden room, which also has a walkout to a balcony overlooking the backyard (grass with some bushes/trees). In the brochure, it mentions a balcony overlooking a "garden"...although it was mid-October and most of the summer flowers had ended, it was evident that even in the summer, a "garden" would be an exageration.
House decor is functional...lots of personal pictures of the innkeeper's family which was a little strange given the owners do not live in the house. The garden room had venetian blinds that did not work properly when drawn or lowered and the carpet in the bedroom was stained. These things can be easily repaired and need to be at this price!
The garden room also had no closet or armoire although there is a small dresser that will fit enough clothes for a weekend, and a number of hooks on the wall to hang clothes...it worked but for the price, we would have expected more.
In general, the stay was ok, but there are a number of things that the innkeeper can improve in order to move this establishment to the next level. Firstly, the service from the innkeeper, although a pleasant man, is limited and mostly "reserved"...we have stayed in many inns and mostly find the hosts to be very outgoing individuals who bend over backward to make you feel comfortable, offer advice, help with check-in, etc. The innkeeper definately takes a hands-off approach and only helps if specifically asked...we find this atypical for most B&Bs.
For example, upon arrival, we were greeted by "Instructions in a frame" which advise the guest to call a phone number. It is promptly answered by the innkeeper and you are instructed to the location of your room and he does show up about an hour later.
The home is clean, orderly and functional, however there are very few "little perks" such as special toilettries, glassware, warm throws, plush towels, etc. For the price of the room, we had expected more. The TV, mostly unimportant to us, was a an old model with 10" screen! Even for watching the news, it is inappropriate.
Breakfast was nicely prepared but lacks significant variety especially around fruit/yogurt and healthy choices, but the service from the innkeeper is limited to function rather than welcoming service. At the price of this B&B, the breakfast can easily be improved at very little additional cost to the innkeeper (no toast was offered). Very nice omelletes and good coffee too! Breakfast is served from 8am at one table in the home's dining room so you must be open to sociializing with others early in the morning. We find that many places we have stayed have the option of breakfast with others, or at a separate table if you prefer to be independent.
Good location half way between the village of Ogunquit and Perkin's Cove along Shore Road...both are easily walkable in about 10-15 min each way. Also close walking distance to great restaurants in either direction!
I believe that for the price during this off-season peak, there are better choices in Ogunquit...it appears that the prices did not change much from peak of summer to mid-October at Morning Dove. Also very close to the scenic walkway along the ocean!
Overall, if you don't need warm and attentive service and prefer to be left on your own, and if you don't expect little perks at a mid-high price, and if various malfunctioning things don't bother you, then this would likely be ok for you!
